WWF Supports Govt’s Bid to Ban Rhino Horn Trade

The WWF lends its support to Molewa's bid to have a ban in local trade in rhino horn re-instated

The World Wild Life Fund (WWF) has lent its support to Environmental Minister Edna Molewa's bid to have a ban in local trade in rhino horn re-instated.

Molewa will petition the Supreme Court of Appeal for leave to appeal a court order lifting the moratorium. The High Court in Pretoria earlier dismissed her application for leave to appeal.

WWF’s Rhino Programme manager, Jo Shaw, argues that, “There isn't a market for rhino horn in South Africa and so lifting the moratorium is only going to encourage illegal activity. We know the demand comes from overseas and Asia and the current international trade ban is still in place.”
