We Did Not Realise

We did not realise
it would make
such an impression
in our post-apartheid era
(where infant mortality is high)

We did not realise
confess the students
who black-bagged
an apartheid-past figure
(did a revolution transpire)

An apartheid-past figure
large as life all statuesque
not yet rubbished by far
out here in the windy colony
(does your tax-dollar sustain it)

We did not realise
apartheid is with usstill
bagged and unbagged
reminding us of ourselves
(and we say our youth is lost)

We did not realise
students in a class project
(all giggly and innocent)
a symbolic demonstration
against forms of slavery

We did not realise
it would make
such an impression
mission accomplished

“Students ‘confess’ to bagging Smuts” is relegated to page 3 (Cape Times, 20 October 2010) after thenewspaper’s previous morning front page seeming conundrum of “Smuts shroud causes”.
