Civil and Political Rights Report 2016/17

This report by the South African Human Rights Commission (SAHRC or the Commission) examines key developments around civil and political rights (CPR) in South Africa during 2016/2017. Over the past year the country has witnessed civil and political rights violations in relation to the following: use of excessive force during protests; overcrowding in correctional centres and violation of prisoners’ rights; threats to media freedom; hate crimes against lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and intersex (LGBTI) people and foreign nationals; hate speech; privacy violations; censorship; political violence related to the local government elections; and the heavy-handed policing of Fees Must Fall student protests.
