As a coalition of civil society organisations formed to lobby and advocate for the interest of the NGO sector throughout South Africa, we have been receiving and observing responses to the announcement by President Cyril Ramaphosa towards the economic relief for businesses and support for affected individuals in the country. However, some individuals and organizations have raised concerns that the presentation was silent on the plight of NGOs/NPOs in South Africa.
On the 31st of March 2020, we issued a media statement in response to the petition for immediate distribution of funds by NLC. Our commitment on the media statement was that we will provide feedback to the sector once the matter has been resolved because we were in discussion with the leadership of NLC. While pondering on these concerns and awaiting a response, we have noted with relief, a statement by the NLC Leadership directly addressing these concerns on Wednesday 22nd April 2020.
In the same breath, UCSA acknowledges the NLC for setting up the R 150 million as a further relief measure to NGOs/NPOs and NPC’s struggling to stay afloat during this time.
COVID-19 has had a negative impact on organisations that work selflessly to serve vulnerable members of society. It has become a norm that donors and funders of NGOs/NPOs do not give funds towards operational costs and salaries for projects funded. Therefore, we view this move by the NLC as remarkable and much appreciated by all who comprise of the civil society movement in the country.
