I applied for 1,200 jobs in six months – here's what I learned

An unemployed young woman from Katlehong spent six months looking for a job. As a result, she applied for over one thousand two hundred jobs, and learned lessons she wishes to share with the unemployed young people of South Africa. This is one of the many realities of unemployment is South Africa. Most often we read and talk statistics, and forget that it is people who are affected; someone’s daughter or son, someone’s mother of father is out there unemployed. 

When Thandi Mhlongo was dismissed from her data administrator and online researcher job with immediate effect last July, her world fell apart. As the breadwinner in her family, and with a younger sister in matric, the 24-year-old from Katlehong in Johannesburg's East Rand knew she had to find a new job and soon.
