In late March, Relativ in collaboration with one of our tech partners - SocialSuite, in conjunction with Salesforce, launched a Free COVID-19 Impact Assessment Survey. By mid-May over 500 people in South Africa had participated in this initiative, and has gained over 4000 participants globally.
The social and economic impact of COVID-19: how does South Africa compare with the world?
Globally an overwhelming 69% of respondents to the survey reported having high stress levels. This was similar to that of the South African respondents where 65% showed the same stress levels. The results to date show that people between the ages of 55 and 64 are suffering the most stress at present.
Top 3 activities providing relief up to the end of May were:
- Exercising and keeping active
- Keeping virtual contact with family and friends
Many respondents cited that their main concerns around the pandemic and social isolation were around thefinancial strain, loss of employment and an overall loss of connection with society. Many respondents were also worried about the effect of isolation on their mental health, a concern shared across the globe.
The top 3 areas of support needed were:
- Financial support as a result of a loss of employment in the household
- Having someone to speak to either for emotional support, or as a sounding board for frustration
- Support from employer and business support for job retention and keeping small businesses afloat
When asked about access to basic needs, 33% of respondent in South Africa are worried that their household supplies will run out. Far higher than the global average of 9%. Over half the people were worried they would become infected and more than 20% believe they or their loved ones would not survive.
