Learners receive coffee or tea and a rusk in the morning and a meal at lunch every day of their practical skills like communication and time management, but they are taught that their lives have purpose. A Christ-centred foundation is laid in their lives, resulting in changed morals and values. Learners trained at POPUP enter society as changed people who can make a difference in their communities, family, friends and working environment.

Job Creation and Placement:

POPUP is involved with entrepreneurial development by means of a Project and Enterprise Development (PED) training programme. POPUP also assists learners to create their own small enterprises which are made possible due to the benefits provided to the corporate industry and BEE Enterprise Development and Socio Economic scorecard points obtained when funding such entrepreneurial initiatives. Through companies’ financial involvement, POPUP is in the position to provide starter kits and mentorship during the start-up phase of the business. The private and civil sector can employ learners who have successfully completed their studies at POPUP by appointing them as entry level staff members, thus acquiring personnel with integrated sound morals and values.

Partnering with POPUP includes the following benefits:

  • Secure your company’s BEE score-card points, through Socio Economic and Enterprise Development Involvement;
  • Tax benefit - POPUP is registered as a Public Benefit Organisation (PBO) and has Section 18A status;
  • Companies or Employers may also send their entry (lower) level staff to POPUP and pay higher fees for their staff member’s training, but may claim it from the Skills Development Fund (as a rebate) whilst also qualifying for tax and Socio Economic BEE scorecard points. Not only will companies benefit by improving the skills level of their staff, but will also notice that their staff adopted excellent values and morals. You can be assured that you will receive a transformed employee back. POPUP is also willing to present their PGP at your business during hours that suit you as an employer and do the training over a number of weeks. You may select the level and number of people you want to attend the programme;
  • POPUP makes use of the services of recruitment agencies to place qualified learners. They have trained 4 100 learners and placed 77 percent of them in employment over the past seven years. You may contact POPUP if you want to employ some of our ex-learners;
  • A team building exercise at the POPUP facilities will result in your staff feeling that they are making a difference whilst being of assistance to POPUP;
  • Donations 'in kind' such as food, clothing, furniture, equipment and not only financial contributions, very often make a marked difference.

New Venture Creation

POPUP also invests in learners who want to start with their own business ventures and together with the corporate world (by means of BEE scorecard involvement) learners develop during a year incubation phase (on the POPUP premises) taking place under the watchful eye of a facilitator who monitors quality and standards. After a year the equipped entrepreneur exits POPUP with his or her equipment and start-up kit as a confident person ready to start his / her own business in the society.

Social Support Services:

Food Programme: POPUP’s food programme gives food to approximately 600 people per week day. This number will increase as soon as POPUP expands to Soshanguve because every learner receives a free meal during their studying period at POPUP. According to internal research, approximately 12 percent of POPUP’s learners only enjoys one meal a day and that is the meal at POPUP.

Soup Kitchen: Our soup kitchen distributes food every week day at Salvokop’s informal settlement 'Bagdad' to approximately 150 to 180 homeless people.

Food parcels: Food parcels are issued on a weekly basis to round about 55 needy families / individuals (of whom our own learners are also beneficiaries).

Clothing store: The store hands out free clothing to the needy that is monitored and evaluated on a regular basis. The beneficiaries (adults and children) are screened by the social worker and the clothing store is monitored by means of a database. Clothes are issued on specific interval periods per annum.

Counselling: POPUP offers a supportive service for everyone, especially to traumatised people. Every learner attends at least two one-on-one counselling sessions with the POPUP counsellors and these sessions may increase according to an individual’s needs.

POPKids: POPKids Salvokop Day Care Centre cares for 77 toddlers aged between one and five years. POPKids provides in the children’s physical, spiritual and educational needs. Children receive a breakfast and balanced lunch, with a tea / juice break where fruit is also given as well as afternoon snacks.

Medical, Dental and Eye Care Services:

POPMed: POPMed is a medical clinic which renders a free service (including basic medicine) to people and households with a monthly income lower than R3000 per month. It is run by a full time qualified nursing sister. POPMed provides basic community health care services and also deals with aspects such as healthy eating, social behaviour, chronic illnesses and cultural beliefs, which are addressed Biblically. POPUP is also registered as a HIV / AIDS Testing and Counselling Centre. One day per week, a medical practitioner is on site where patients can receive required prescriptions. A nominal fee of R100 is payable for this specific service.

POPDent: POPDent is a fully equipped community dentistry clinic. The services include extraction of teeth, fillings, scaling and polishing and general dental health promotion. We are currently dependent on private dentists who assist with services at specific intervals.

POPEye: POPEye offers an eye care service that includes eye testing and supplying frames and glasses at reasonable costs to those in need. POPUP partnered with an optometrist practice that renders the service. All learners who register for a skills programme receive a free visual screening examination.

POPUP is a unique social investment opportunity with training and services rendered at high quality and standards. We trust that more lives will be restored and that more people will gain skills that will make them employable. Learners leave the organisation with the knowledge that their lives have a purpose and meaning.

Your contributions make it possible for us to continue to provide these services and to contribute positively to the lives of many of their learners.
