Description:

The Institute for the Advancement of Journalism (IAJ) is an established media journalism and communications training institution based in Johannesburg, South Africa. IAJ was set up by veteran South African editors and journalists to provide mid-career training to media professionals, and is relevant to the rapidly changing media landscape. IAJ is South Africa’s premier provider of journalism and communications short courses, long-term mentorships and residency programmes, with an African footprint and global reach through its international partners.

Since its inception, tens of thousands of people have passed through the IAJ's doors, and many of them now occupy key posts in the media. IAJ has an unmatched reach across the African continent and is internationally respected. It is independent of government, industry and academia - yet works closely with all these sectors in advancing the quality of journalism and communications. Its innovative approach to curriculum development makes it responsive to the rapidly changing media landscape, while acting to promote plurality in the media, and to strengthen democracy.

The organisation aims to create a better media environment through developing the skills of journalists and professional communicators by providing a complete set of seminars, short courses and longer term interventions.  Both individuals and companies may develop through training tailored to their individual needs.

It has both a 100 percent certified Broad-Based Black Economic Empowerment (BBBEE) procurement status, and is run by a management team supervised by a governing board of media industry experts, and is also chaired by respected Press Ombudsman, Joe Thloloe.

Currently, IAJ is positioning itself as a thoughtleader in the African media sphere. Working with its many partners, IAJ runs short courses, seminars, long courses, diplomas, onsite training and offers a number of other services.

IAJ is also certified by the Media & ICT Sector Education Training Authority (MICT-SETA). This means that companies who send people to IAJ for training can claim back from their skills development levy - which translates to a 40 to 50 percent monetary return - and staff members are trained to international standards. The rebate is dependent on having a skills development plan in place.

Over two decades, IAJ has earned a high reputation for providing relevant, tailored training for media, NGO, corporate, and government clients. Its presence is extended internationally through partnerships with top training institutions in Germany, India, and the United States.
