Description:

Free Emergency Medical Response Service - Community Medics launched in City Bowl

Community Medics started out as Camps Bay Community Medics (CBCM), which was officially registered as a Trust in 2007, however, has been operational since as early as 1998. The organisation was established by two local paramedics, who identified that the response of Emergency Medical Services was lacking in the Camps Bay area. Since the involvement of CBCM the average response time in Camps Bay has been reduced significantly, to achieve beyond accepted international standards - CBCM achieved an average response time of 8 minutes compared to the international standards of 10 minutes.

In May 2013, through support from ER24, CBCM expanded its area of operation to include the City Bowl area and rebranded as Community Medics (CM). Community Medics is made up of a strong team of 20 highly dedicated professional who volunteer their time and expertise to ensure all patients receive a professional and rapid response in their time of crisis. Through the financial and operational support of ER24, Community Medics is able to provide a full time salaried paramedic.

It is because of the partnership and support provided by ER24, Communications Hub and ADT that Community Medics has been able to expand into the City Bowl.

Community Medics aims to provide all members of the communities of Camps Bay, City Bowl and surrounding areas equal yet world class medical support.

The Community Medics’ vision is to provide the quickest and most efficient emergency medical response within Community Medics' area of operation. Community Medics are making it their mission to be a leading professional and efficient emergency medical service in their area. The values of the Community Medics are to serve the community with integrity, commitment, professionalism and care.

Community Medics Services

Community Medics operates a 24-hour call centre to field any medical emergency in the Camps Bay, City Bowl and surrounding areas. After receiving an emergency call, their call centre dispatches a medic on duty and coordinates the dispatch of any additional services that might be required on the scene. Once on the scene, the Community Medics attend to the patient and manage the scene of the incident.

The greatest challenge presented to Community Medics is relying on limited resources to respond to the growing number of medical emergencies as their services are needed on a daily basis. As Community Medics is a Public Benefit Organisation providing a free emergency medical service, they rely solely on donations for the community in which they serve. Community Medics’ current team is run and managed entirely by volunteers, who donate their time on a part time basis.
The future opportunities for Community Medics are vast. Most important is the building, maintaining and nurturing partnership with other emergency services and funding relationships with corporate donors as well as their own community areas. The opportunity for future expansion is endless for Community Medics, as there are multiple communities within Cape Town and South Africa that could benefit from a free emergency medical service.

Contribution to Society

Community Medics is dedicated to providing the community with first world emergency medical care within a developing world environment. Community Medics’ highly trained team of emergency medical personnel with access to world class equipment and technology aims to deliver a rapid response to all members of the community. They aim to improve the standard of care for emergency medicine in South Africa and relieve the stress and pressure placed on the government services. Through Community Medics they hope to reduce the time a member of the community waits for emergency medical service and also to ensure the highest level of care is given to patients in their hour of need.
