Description:

The Christian Outreach Trust (COT) is a nonprofit organisation with a section 18A certificate aligned to St. Agnes Church in Kloof, Kwazulu-Natal, South Africa. It was formed in 1997 originally to rehabilitate, through education, 24 young people left homeless after the closure of a nearby shelter.

COT has grown enormously over the years. It now helps a large number of disadvantaged students of all ages with bursaries for their education but further to this, provides accommodation, food and transport for up to six bursary students in COT House, situated in Pinetown.

The objective of the organisation is to fulfil its students' dreams through education.

In order to achieve this, COT encourages educational achievement for those from an impoverished or residential home background by offering educational and skills training opportunities. The organisation provides food, shelter, clothes and financial support to those in its programmes where necessary.

Vision and Projects

COT’s aim is to empower disadvantaged young people through education. To achieve this aim, COT:

  • Encourages educational achievement for vulnerable children and young adults from foundation phase through to tertiary education;
  • Provides food, shelter , clothes and financial support where necessary;
  • Involves members of its community in this initiative so they might enrich themselves and the lives of others by sharing their skills, talents and resources;
  • Encourages the development of Christian values in COT students.

During the 15 years, COT has been in operation, helping many vulnerable children and young adults become self- sufficient and realise their potential through education.

COT House

The organisation’s three-bedroomed apartment in Pinetown, accommodating six students, is its original project and still remains the main focus of its work.

COT believes it is a unique concept enabling these students to study in the safety of a family atmosphere with members of the committee interacting with them individually.

The students live alone in the house as a family for the length of their studies and in doing so, learn much needed life and management skills with the committee providing help and advice when needed.
