Employment The Centre for Applied Legal Studies (CALS) is a leading human rights centre which undertakes research, strategic litigation and public interest advocacy. CALS currently runs five programmes namely basic services, education, environment, gender and rule of law.
The Wits Law Clinic and CALS seek to appoint a Candidate Attorney, based in Johannesburg.
S/he will serve one year of his/her articles at CALS and the other year at the Wits Law Clinic.
S/he will support the work of CALS programmes with a particular focus on the housing rights work conducted by the basic services programme.
Responsibilities:
- Research in support of advocacy and litigation activities;
- Conduct field research in communities;
- Draft pleadings and legal opinions;
- Assist in the drafting of research reports;
- Provide input into draft policies and legislation;
- Prepare documents for court;
- Client management;
- Liaise with counsel;
- File management.
- LLB degree;
- Advanced degree with specialisation in human rights will be an advantage;
- Verbal and written communication skills in English;
- Ability to speak some of South Africa’s official languages will be an advantage;
- Computer literacy in Microsoft Office;
- Interested in human rights work.
