The South to South Programme, part of the Faculty of Health Sciences at the University of Stellenbosch, provides technical, programme, capacity building and systems support to various USAID-funded organisations to accelerate access to HIV Prevention, Care & Treatment services for high-risk groups such as HIV-infected pregnant women and children.

This USAID-funded programme is part of the PEPFAR initiative to combat HIV/AIDS in South Africa.

South to South seeks to appoint a Maternal Health/PMTCT/HIV Clinical Advisor, based in Western Cape.

The successful candidate will be appointed as member of a technical team affiliated to Tygerberg Children’s Hospital and provide consistent and high-quality support to different programme interventions within the respective technical area, working as part of a multidisciplinary outreach team that provides site support for the implementation, improvement and expansion of family-centred HIV services in South Africa.

This position is in the programme implementation capacity - not in the research or academic capacity.

This is a one-year contract position with possibility of extension.

Responsibilities:
  • Provide direct technical assistance to healthcare facilities supported by collaborating partners which may include on-site and off-site training, modelling skills, facilitation of community linkages, patient flow analysis;
  • Support the strengthening, development and management of clinical systems related to HIV/AIDS service scale-up, including information, adherence and referral support;
  • Serve as a resource for the development of training materials in Maternal and Reproductive Health and PMTCT HIV/AIDS programming and evaluation;
  • Provide direct support to healthcare providers to ensure clinical HIV care/management is conducted according to national guidelines and in a timely manner;
  • Liaise with PMTCT, paediatric, psychosocial support and adherence programmes, as well as community outreach programmes;
  • Work closely with other partners to maximise partnership strengths and effectively collaborate to implement programme goals;
  • Design, conduct and report operations research in Maternal and Reproductive Health, PMTCT and HIV/AIDS programming areas;
  • Perform other duties and responsibilities as defined.
Requirements:
  • Qualification as a medical practitioner;
  • Registration with the Health Professions Council of South Africa;
  • Clinical experience in Maternal and Reproductive Health, infant nutrition and PMTCT programmes;
  • Grasp of clinical issues and current literature on HIV/AIDS treatment;
  • Training experience;
  • Clinical mentorship and supportive supervision experience;
  • Minimum of three three years experience in HIV and Public Health programming;
  • Problem-solving and analytical skills;
  • Interpersonal skills;
  • Written and spoken command of English;
  • High level of proficiency in relevant computer applications, particularly Microsoft Office;
  • Willingness and availability to travel 40% of the time, predominantly within South Africa;
  • International candidates must obtain a South African employment permit.
  • Experience in HIV/AIDS PMTCT, Maternal and Reproductive Health, Infant Nutrition, and Paediatric care and treatment and TB/HIV programme management will be an advantage.
