Umtha Welanga is a public benefit, nonprofit organisation that provides capacity building on HIV/AIDS through education and awareness programmes. The organisation renders support services to people infected with HIV, recruit and monitor foster parents so as to provide a family environment for orphaned and vulnerable children.

Umtha Welanga seeks to appoint a Community Social Worker, based in Khayelitsha, Cape Town.

S/he will provide community based social services to identified groups, individuals and families within applicable legislation in order to protect and improve the social well-being and functioning of families and individuals. S/he will report to the Director, and will provide case plans of care to his/her supervisor for approval.

This is a one-year contract position.

Responsibilities:
  • Decide and take action independently without consultation with the supervisor.  S/he is expected to seek direction from his/her supervisor when faced with out-of-the-ordinary situations.  The caseload may include multi problem children or familes with complex needs;
  • Provide child protection services, within applicable legislation, to prevent children up to the age of 16 from suffering emotional, sexual, physical and/or other types of abuse and neglect;
  • Provide mental health services within the code of ethics;
  • Provide community development services in order to improve social functioning;
  • Respond to reports of abuse;
  • Provide support services;
  • Apprehend children in immediate need of protection;
  • Develop and implement case plans including reviews and evaluations;
  • Facilitate foster home care (development, recruitment and training, placement, monitoring and evaluations);
  • Provide adoption services by conducting personal history reports, making recommendations and completing family reunion reports.
Requirements:
  • Knowledge of social work theories, practices and procedures;
  • Knowledge and understanding of all pertinent legislation and policies including Child and Family Act and the Adoption Act;
  • Organisational, verbal and written communication skills;
  • Interviewing and analytical skills;
  • Computer literacy;
  • Flexible, adaptable and able to work effectively in a variety of settings and in a cross cultural situation;
  • Knowledge of the services available in the community.
Starting date: 15 March 2012.

Salary: R10 000 per month.
