The Journalism Department at the University of the Witwatersrand invites applications for the Taco Kuiper Visiting Fellowship for Investigative Journalism.
The fellowship is for the second semester (mid-July to mid-November 2012). The department will consider applications for this year or 2013 and 2014.
The Fellow will be expected to teach and supervise work and research at Honours and Masters level:
- Supervise and investigation with masters students;
- Run workshops at the department’s investigative Power Reporting Conference;
- Mentor students in their annual in-depth reporting project; and
- Speak at one public lecture/seminar.
Applicants must have substantial experience as an investigative journalist as well as in teaching, research and mentoring.
The department is particularly interested in offering a Fellowship to a candidate with data journalism experience.
The position is endowed by the Valley Trust in memory of its founder, Taco Kuiper, a publisher who left the bulk of his estate to the promotion of investigative reporting. The candidate will be based in Wits Journalism, a dynamic postgraduate centre with both career-entry and mid-career students. Remuneration is at the level of a professorship, including travel and work permit costs, and assistance with accommodation in Johannesburg.
