The Steve Biko Foundation is a community development organisation inspired by the late anti-apartheid activist Steve Biko, (18 December 1946 - 12 September 1977), one of the Black Consciousness Movement's most prominent leaders.

The Foundation seeks to appoint a Curator, based at the new Steve Biko Centre in Ginsberg, Eastern Cape.

S/he will oversee and run the day-to-day operations of the museum and exhibition spaces.

Responsibilities:
  • Work collaboratively with relevant stakeholders, to establish the museum and exhibition spaces, including generating the strategic plan, all necessary policies, operational procedures and operating systems;
  • Acquire, care for, develop, display and interpret the Foundation’s collection of artifacts, works of art and audio-visual materials in order to inform, educate and entertain the public through the facilitation of innovative and creative exhibitions which appeal to a wide variety of audiences;
  • Facilitate community development programmes with a view to collecting both oral and written histories to benefit the centre’s content and to enhance the life of the local community;
  • Create an enabling environment for artists and cultural practitioners to utilise the centre as a space for developing art and artifacts;
  • Work collaboratively with other units within the Foundation on public relations, marketing, fundraising and education programmes, through training, workshops and other means;
  • Manage and administer the day-to-day operations of the unit including budget preparation, financial and administrative matters and human resources including recruitment, training and monitoring employee performance;
  • Ensure the quality of the complete visitor experience.
Requirements:
  • PhD or Master’s degree in relevant field;
  • Minimum of five years of experience in (exhibition planning, writing, installation and display, basic community development programmes, museums, memorial sites and other cultural institutions);
  • Experience in local, national and international trends in the arts and culture fields, research on local political history and relevance to global trends;
  • Self-motivated with ability to lead innovation;
  • Project management and monitoring and evaluation skills;
  • Experience in budget management;
  • Ability to fundraise;
  • Computer literacy;
  • Ability to conduct research;
  • Communication skills (verbal and written).
Salary: A salary commensurate with experience will be offered.
