Print management
Jacana is not a printer, but we have managed print for numerous clients for many years. We have a sound understanding of printing processes and quality requirements. We print large numbers of books for our publishing division and are thus able to negotiate good print prices with various printers. We are able to advise on the most appropriate printers, colour requirements and paper stocks for different products.

Our role as print manager includes the following tasks:

  • Preparation of print orders
  • Advice on paper and print specifications
  • Advice on layout for economical printing
  • Delivery of final discs to printer
  • Proofing of publications before big print runs
  • Follow-up with printers to ensure adherence to timelines and quality

Electronic books
Jacana Media converts to three types of eBook files: dPDF, epub and mobi. dPDF files are downloadable PDF’s that are encrypted by an Adobe server as the download is released. The PDF is downloaded into Adobe Digital Editions Library, which is a free application. The PDF can be shared with up to 5 devices registered to the person and is not printable.
Epub files are compatible with most handheld devices, i.e. iPad, Smartphones, Samsung Tablets, Blackberry Playbook and various other readers. There are various applications that can be downloaded onto these devices to read epub files. Epub files would also need
to sit on a server that encrypts the files with digital rights. Mobi files are specifically for Kindle and can only be downloaded from Amazon websites.
Cost of conversion depends on the complexity of material. Standard text is simple and cheaper to convert than books containing graphs, tables and illustrations.
