Médecins Sans Frontières/Doctors Without Borders (MSF) is an international humanitarian medical aid organisation, established in 1971. MSF provides assistance to populations in distress, including victims of natural disasters, wars, conflicts, epidemics, among others. MSF members include medical, paramedical, technical and logistical, financial, administrative employees who carry out humanitarian assistance activities in the field.

Medecins Sans Frontieres/Doctors Without Borders (MSF) South Africa was established in 2007 to support MSF programmes in the region and elsewhere by providing medical expertise, recruiting medical and other professionals and raising funds. MSF also speaks out about medical and humanitarian crises faced by vulnerable communities by sharing information with the South African public, the media, government agencies, and other non-governmental organisations.

MSF South Africa Fundraising Unit seeks to appoint a National Face-to-Face (F2F) Coordinator, based in Johannesburg.

S/he will be responsible for the management of the national F2F fundraising programme. This includes strategic planning, budgeting and the day-to-day management of three permanent F2F fundraising teams (Johannesburg, Pretoria and Cape Town) and two temporary travel teams.

S/he will report to the Head of Fundraising.

Responsibilities:
  • Plan, coordinate and manage all F2F fundraising in South Africa, in accordance with MSF’s annual plan and in consultation with the Head of Fundraising;
  • Provide effective human resource management of F2F canvassers and Team Leaders;
  • Develop and maintain an on-going recruitment and training strategy for F2F canvassers;
  • Continuously monitor and analyse F2F results, including follow-up against targets and budget, and regular reporting to the Head of fundraising;
  • Evaluate and book new and current F2F venues in all operational cities and travel team destinations;
  • Ensure the adequate supply and control of appropriate F2F materials;
  • Conduct regular site visits to evaluate recruiters;
  • Receive and record daily feedback from Team Leaders about the canvassers’ performance/difficulties, and assist when necessary;
  • Keep track of completed forms returned to the office and develop systems to improve this process;
  • Ensure the follow up of all incomplete forms;
  • Authorise all F2F expenses, specifically salaries and payments to the canvassers;
  • Proactively improve current F2F methods and test new strategies;
  • Plan, implement and evaluate the temporary travel team projects.
Requirements:
  • Background/studies in marketing, public relations and/or development;
  • Experience in marketing via direct dialogue or direct marketing; preferably F2F fundraising;
  • Strong interest in humanitarian issues and sharing of MSF values;
  • Planning, coordinating and conducting projects skills;
  • Broad experience of team leadership and management;
  • Communicative, reliable and thorough, and able to lead, inspire and motivate the team on a daily basis;
  • Ability to generate reliable statistics, documentation and progress reports;
  • Computer literacy, especially Microsoft Word and Excel;
  • Fluency in English (spoken and written);
  • Willingness to travel within South Africa;
  • Valid driver’s license.
Desirable skills:
  • Experience of human resource management and recruitment;
  • Experience and understanding of private fundraising;
  • Experience with other humanitarian organisations;
  • Knowledge of Cape Town, Pretoria and Johannesburg.
