Médecins Sans Frontières/Doctors Without Borders (MSF) is an international humanitarian medical aid organisation, established in 1971. MSF provides assistance to populations in distress, including victims of natural disasters, wars, conflicts, epidemics, among others. MSF members include medical, paramedical, technical and logistical, financial, administrative employees who carry out humanitarian assistance activities in the field.

The Solidarity for Survival (S4S) is an exhibition campaign that probes the reasons for people leaving their countries of origin, with a focus on five countries where MSF operates in sub-Saharan Africa.

MSF South Africa seeks to appoint an Intern - Programmes Campaign Coordinator, based in Johannesburg.

S/he will lead on the coordination front for the Solidarity for Survival Campaign Exhibition.

The Intern will report directly to the Head of Programmes Unit.

This is a four-month internship contract position.

Responsibilities:
  • Work closely with the Artistic Consultant to Organise all S4S events, including meetings, workshops and activities
  • Draft budgets and minute meetings and workshops for the campaign;
  • Secure venues, catering and accommodation;
  • Invite participants and speakers;
  • Prepare documentation and brochures that will raise awareness about the campaign and inform visitors to the exhibition;
  • Organise transport (flights, buses, etc.) and reimbursement for transport costs;
  • Registration of participants;
  • Liaise with MSF networks and partners to raise awareness about the campaign;
  • Write and/or coordinate the writing of reports, Evaluation and Public reports.
  • Undertake daily updates of the content for the S4S website, Google groups and other social networking tools
  • Update S4S website in terms of documents, news and other developments;
  • Work with Communications Unit on the S4S Google groups (S4S Working Group, S4S news, community media, mainstream media) –ensuring relevant information is sent out, and that contact details are correct and up to date;
  • Maximise usage of other social networking tools, with an emphasis on ensuring S4S Twitter and the current S4S Facebook page are used as advocacy tools.
Requirements:
  • Commitment to social justice;
  • Writing and editing skills;
  • Computer experience in word processing (HTML), spread sheets, website and email;
  • Ability to maximising social networking tools for advocacy (including Google groups, Twitter and Facebook);
  • Event management, including administration and logistics;
  • Self-motivated and ability to take initiative;
  • Accurate and meticulous;
  • Tolerant and patient;
  • Systematic and organised;
  • Sensitive to diversity and cultural issues;
  • Attention to detail;
  • Ability to work in a team;
  • Computer literacy.
Starting date: 1 March 2012.

Remuneration: A stipend will be offered.

This role is an opportunity to explore the day to day operation of an NGO and to become acquainted with the means and methods of NGO communications. Also there will be ample opportunity to learn about Médecins Sans Frontières and you are welcome to attend and contribute to weekly office meetings and operational updates.
