Khanya College is an independent, non-governmental organisation that assists various constituencies within working class and poor communities to respond to the challenges posed by the forces of economic and political globalisation.

Khanya College seeks to appoint a Researcher / Monitoring and Evaluation (M&E) Officer, based in Johannesburg.

Responsibilities:
  • Conduct research on various issues facing the social movements and the social justice movement in general;
  • Work with other Khanya staff involved in conducting research and assist in managing ongoing research projects within the College;
  • Participate in identify Khanya College’s research needs and develop the College’s research agenda and programme;
  • Work with the Coordinator for Research to develop links and partnerships with other organisations doing research relevant to the social movements and the social justice movement in general;
  • Participate in the training volunteer researchers for the social movements in research methods and techniques, and assign supervise research tasks for the volunteer researchers;
  • Publish articles relevant to the social justice movement in progressive journal and in academic journals where appropriate. In particular, write and publish articles in the Khanya Journal;
  • Represent Khanya College at conferences relevant to the work of the research department;
  • Raise the profile of the research work of the Khanya College and ensure its representation in the public domain;
  • Conduct (political) education work for the various movements the College works with;
  • Participate in the editorial collective of the Khanya Journal;
  • Raise funds for research projects;
  • Report to the College and to donors on the progress of the research projects;
  • Collaborate with other researchers in the planning, implementation, and evaluation of surveys;
  • Conduct surveys and collect data, using methods such as interviews, questionnaires, focus groups, market analysis surveys, public opinion polls, literature reviews, and file reviews.
  • Write training manuals to be used by survey interviewers;
  • Conduct monitoring and evaluation of College programmes;
  • Deliver quality monitoring reports;
  • Maintain up-to -date information on project monitoring and evaluation plans;
  • Provide input to ensure constant improvement of the organisation's performance management processes;
  • Participate in the development and maintenance of M&E policies, strategies and plans.
Requirements
  • Tertiary qualification in humanities, an equivalent qualification with experience;
  • Interest in research on social justice issues;
  • Knowledge of various research techniques and methods, including surveys, interview skills, ethnographic methods and others;
  • Knowledge of various monitoring and evaluation processes, procedures and technique;
  • Knowledge of log frame, results based management and other planning and monitoring tools;
  • Ability to write and present reports;
  • Ability to work to strict guidelines;
  • Ability to write for a popular audience;
  • Presentation skills and clear and confident in team communication;
  • Research project management skills;
  • Computer literacy in Microsoft Excel, online research and email applications;
  • Multi-lingual;
  • Valid driver's license.

Salary: R101 300 - R127 500 per annum, total cost to company depending on experience and skills. The College offers traditional benefits like medical aid, provident fund, and 13th month cheque.
