Institute for Justice and Reconciliation: Communication Officer
The Institute for Justice and Reconciliation (IJR) was launched in 2000 in the aftermath of South Africa´s Truth and Reconciliation Commission. IJR cultivates the potential for reconciliation and socio-economic justice in Africa through strategic partnerships and carefully constructed interventions.
The Communication and Strategy Unit at the IJR drives all cross-cutting issues within the organisation, works closely with programmes and assists with planning, coordination and communication services. It also renders a basic support function such as maintenance and updating of the website and social media as well as ensuring that all stakeholders are informed about developments at the IJR. As a new unit at the Institute, it will for the first time next year take on its own content and design small projects to communicate a message of reconciliation to the outside.
IJR seeks to appoint a Communication Officer - Communication and Strategy Unit, based in Cape Town.
The IJR Communication Officer is a newly created position. S/he will be responsible for driving the implementation of the IJR communication strategy, focusing on external and internal communication under the guidance of the Head of Strategy and Communication.
This is an initial contract of two years from January 2012 - December 2013 with a three months of probation.
Responsibilities:
Communication of IJR’s message through the media
- Compile and edit the Institutes monthly newsletter;
- Assist with branding, marketing and special events such as the Reconciliatoin Award and Ashley Kriel Memorial Lecture;
- Assist with communication and information management (sourcing media clippings, media alerts and media tracking);
- Manage, monitor and evaluate the project budgets;
- Project reporting and administration;
- Internet research and website content management;
- Source and write articles for the op-ed series;
- Media relations (writing press releases for IJR events);
- Compile regular press reviews and monitor the Institute's activities in its area of interest.
Requirements:
- Bachelor's degree or diploma in communications and/or public relations
- Minimum of three years working experience in communication and/or public relations;
- Experience in the NGO sector;
- Ability to build and manage key relationships in South African media;
- Communicator who can work comfortably with diverse groups of people;
- Writing skills in English and another South African language;
- Attention to detail;
- Ability to prioritise work and manage deadlines;
- Ability to manage a project from inception to delivery, including working with budgets, managing dependencies and taking responsibility for project success;
- Ability to contribute to project planning and strategic direction of the unit;
- Computer Literacy;
- Decision-making and problem solving skills;
- Website content management skills;
- Knowledge of social media.
Salary: IJR will offer a remuneration package commensurate experience and qualifications.
