The Regional Office for Southern Africa of the Dutch Humanist Institute for Cooperation with Developing Countries Hivos, aims towards an open and green society, inspired by humanist values such as freedom, dignity, responsibility and curiosity. We will do this by scanning, experimenting and scaling change initiatives and learning throughout the process.
To support our office generate new initiatives and mobilise resources we are looking for a:
Business Development Manager (BDM) Open Society (Fixed term contract-full time)
The BDM Open is first of all responsible for regional program development/design and fundraising in the Open Domain. Secondly the BDM Keeps managerial oversight over the whole Open Program in the Region and reports as such to the Director Regional Office Southern Africa. The BDM Open Monitors the performance of Project Managers & officers and ensures adherence to Hivos policies. In particular Program development/design and fund raising on the overall Open Program Regionally and in themes such as Transparency and Accountability, Freedom of Expression, Sexual Reproductive Rights and women empowerment. The BDM position focuses on planning, scanning, generating and delivering new ideas and leads, cultivates relationships with stakeholders (partners, donors, etc.) that leads to robust resource mobilisation, and facilitates the transformation of innovative ideas and solutions into sustainable programmes and projects which are considered to represent attractive social investment opportunities for donors. The BDM proactively focuses on the phase and process, leading from identification of persistent challenges in Hivos thematic areas to identification of key stakeholders to co-creation of space for innovation with key stakeholders until the successful formulation of solutions and termination of negotiations on resource mobilisation. The BDM scans, identifies and creates new projects and programmes, in line with Hivos’ strategy and profile and in order to achieve the objectives of the strategic plan and the impact of the Hivos vision to attain global funding targets and contribute to Hivos’ sustainability.The BDM delivers the complete Business Development process regarding a specific institutional area/theme on a Regional/international level: initiates, manages and implements specific Hivos Business Development projects: organises labs in which Hivos staff and partners develop ideas, manages professional and donor networks around themes, and translates ideas into viable solutions and into business for Hivos through successful resource mobilisation.
You are a qualified individual with strong analytic skill and an ability to translate analysis into meaningful interventions. You are passionate about human rights, womens rights, and the right to freedom of You are entrepreneurial and not afraid to try something new. You are a good networker with a proven ability to mobilise your network in support of the programme objectives and are innovative and entrepreneurial in finding solutions for major challenges the region is faced with. You are a capable process manager, sensitive to social and political environment and trends, able to transform ideas into tangible solutions; and have experience in co-creation and managing multi-stakeholder projects. You have a proven track record in fundraising and are self disciplined and do not shy away from administrative tasks as part of your responsibilities.
- Level of professional and analytical ability: Masters
- Recognised expert in relevant field, for example; transprarency and accountability, women rights &empowerment,
- Relevant work experience: 8-10 years
- A proven track record in resource mobilisation
- Experience in cocreation and project management, business development
- People Management Skills
- Access to international network.
- Excellent organisational, writing, analytical and administrative skills
- Self-motivation and enthusiasm and ability to work under own initiative

The regional office is based in Harare, Zimbabwe. Hivos welcomes applications from citizens from South Africa, Malawi, Zimbabwe and Zambia but only with a valid work permit for Zimbabwe and can only offer employment on local terms and conditions.
