Habitat for Humanity International (HFHI) is a nonprofit, ecumenical Christian housing ministry. The purpose and goal of Habitat for Humanity International is to eliminate poverty housing and homelessness from the world, and to make decent shelter a matter of conscience and action. HFHI invites people of all backgrounds, races and religions to build houses in partnership with families in need.

In Africa and the Middle East (AME), HFHI is building homes in 19 countries. By working in partnership with families to provide safe affordable shelter, Habitat empowers them to break the cycle of poverty and build the foundation for a secure future.

HFHI seeks to appoint a Communications Coordinator, based in Pretoria.

S/he will guide the strategic direction for external communication of the Africa and the Middle East (AME) area office’s plans and accomplishments.  S/he will not only develop effective strategies to enhance the HFH brand in the AME region but also cultivate new area wide and regional communication partnerships and position HFH AME as the housing expert/leader in AME.

This past year, HFHI celebrated the completion of its 500,000th home in Kenya and continue to grow and expand throughout the AME region and throughout the world.  To accomplish its vision of “A world where everyone has a decent place to live”, Habitat needs an individual who can guide the strategic planning process for regional and area wide approaches to communications and public relations needs, a candidate that can analyse and report on communication impact, someone with the drive and interest in telling Habitat’s compelling story.

S/he will be primarily focused on supporting our area office, national organisations, and branches.

Responsibilities:
  • Mentor and develop emerging talent among HFHI AME entities;
  • Meet annual communications targets assigned;
  • Function as an executive contact in key partnerships and prospects throughout the region;
  • Enhance the HFHI brand in the area through strategic communication initiatives with national organisations and ensuring consistent messaging of brand and logo;
  • Develop relationships with external media sources to ensure that partnerships are aligned with the AME strategies and objectives.
Requirements:
  • Minimum of three years journalism experience in English (preferably in a newsroom environment);
  • Bachelor’s degree;
  • Business presentation skills;
  • Fluency in English (written and verbal);
  • Ability to see a news angle, and to judge and prioritize information of significance for publicising Habitat's activities;
  • Research skills, and clear reasoning and organisational skills;
  • Attention to details;
  • Computer literacy in Microsoft Office.
