Founded over 30 years ago, Centre for the Rehabilitation of Wildlife (CROW) is currently KwaZulu-Natal’s only registered wildlife rehabilitation centre dedicated to the protection and rehabilitation of all indigenous wildlife. From mongoose, genets and monkeys to birds and antelope, CROW represents a second chance at a free, safe and sustainable life for thousands of animals every year.
Sadly, over 90 percent of the animals admitted into CROW’s care are a direct result of human development, neglect, abuse or interference which is why in addition to our 365-day-a-year rescue service, CROW also strives to educate the public, both young and old, on the importance of wildlife conservation and protection.

CROW seeks to appoint an Environmental Education Officer based in Yellowwood Park, Durban.

Presentations at local schools, social clubs and other local venues will also make up a significant part of the role. The Education Officer will report directly to the organisation’s Director. The Environmental Education Officer will commence with CROW in 2014.

The Environmental Education Officer will be responsible for delivering CROW’s Wildlife Warriors environmental education programme. The progamme aims to educate children and young people about the importance of environmental conservation and equip them with the passion, skills and knowledge they need to become proactive ambassadors for our wildlife and environment in their everyday lives. The progamme is aimed at local children and young people aged between 5 and 18 years of age.

  • Delivering CROW’s Wildlife Warriors programme by giving fun, lively and interactive talks and guided tours to school groups and other special interest groups either at the CROW Educentre or out at the schools or other local community venues;
  • Working closely with CROW’s Director, Marketing Officer and EXCO to research, design and implement educational programmes and resources for schools, adults, families, community groups or visitors;
  • Promoting and securing bookings for CROW’s Wildlife Warriors programme and educational resources to the target audience of local schools, children’s homes and special interest groups through telephone calls, emails and letters. (Note: A minimum of 11 bookings of 30 children per month is the set KPI target);
  • Liaising closely with CROW’s Marketing  and Communications Officer to organise events and activities to raise awareness of CROW’s work and environmental issues to schools, children’s homes and other special interest groups;
  • Training others, such as teachers or volunteers in the use of educational resources and in delivering educational sessions as and where required.
  • Recruiting, supervising and working with educational volunteers as and where required;
  • Act as a point of contact for teachers, educationalists and colleagues and  responding timeously to information requests and booking enquiries via telephone, email and fax;
  • Ensure CROW’s Wildlife Warrior’s programme is stringently monitored and evaluated and that any specific monitoring and reporting requirements from donor’s or sponsors are fulfilled;
  • Write and submit a monthly update report to CROW’s Director and EXCO on all activities performed relating to CROW’s Wildlife Warriors Programme.
  • Oversee all administration related to the Wildlife Warriors Programme by keeping detailed and accurate records on all bookings, contacts and participants of CROW’s Wildlife Warriors Programme;
  • Assiting the CROW team with any other duties, activities and events as and when required.


  • A genuine passion for wildlife and environmental conservation;
  • Communication skills in both English and IsiZulu;
  • Presentation and public speaking skills;
  • Planning and organisational skills;
  • Ability to interact with children and young people;
  • Secondary school certificate (matric or equivalent);
  • Minimum 2-3 years experience in education, training or a related field ideally based within the environmental conservation or animal welfare field;
  • Qualifications in education, training or public speaking will be highly desirable;
  • Good computer literacy in Word, Excel, Powerpoint and Outlook;
  • A team player who can interact and work closely with people from diverse backgrounds;
  • A self-starter who can work unsupervised, take the initiative and problem solve when needed;
  • A well spoken, presentable, professional and mature person who can represent the organisation in the public eye;
  • Willing and able to work flexible hours as and when required;
  • A valid code 8 driver’s licence and own transport is also a mandatory requirement.
