The Open Society Initiative for Southern Africa (OSISA) focuses its work on promoting the rule of law, democracy building, human rights, economic development, education, public health, independent media, and access to information. The initiative’s varied activities share a common goal of reducing poverty, HIV/AIDS, and political instability throughout southern Africa.

OSISA HIV/AIDS programme is currently seeking to appoint a suitably qualified consultant to manage a project for a development of a multi-authored book which will capture the experience of the Core Grant Initiative (CGI) and the grantee for the past five years. The terms of reference are outlined in detail below.

Background

The CGI provides core funding to respective partners across respective countries in the southern African region. The objective of the fund is to increase the quantity and quality of civil society work at the intersection of health and human rights. The fund supports civil society organizations that are involved in the following key areas:

  • Advocacy to promote the implementation of HIV and AIDS policies and laws;
  • Monitoring resource flows and expenditures on HIV and AIDS both nationally and internationally;
  • Promoting civil society engagement in policy and law making processes; and
  • Promoting access to care, support and treatment for socially and geographically marginalised and vulnerable groups of people.
Providing core support and strengthening the capacity of partners working in the field of HIV and human rights in the region are the two central thrusts of the CGI. The latter implies contributing towards strengthening partner organisations through respective organisational development interventions including building the operational capacity of partners, enhancing the programmatic impact of their interventions, and contributing towards the long-term financial sustainability of their interventions.

OSISA is a learning organisation, able to adapt and strategically shift its tactics and approaches to suit the highly dynamic context of the region it belongs to. As such, OSISA is committed to processes that constructively support the growth and development of those institutions in the region seeking more open societies and that assist in shaping OSISA’s own position to be an effective contributor to that shift. Publications during and/or at the end of a project’s or programmes implementation phase are a key component of that learning.

The objectives of the project
 
The Book Project Manager will oversee the production of the CGI book, which will provide an overview of organisational development/ institution building journey of respective CGI partners and of OSISA – LAHI. Essentially, the book will serve to:
  • Provide a resource on organisational development approaches and interventions within the Southern African context;
  • Reflect on the respective challenges, opportunities and responses by respective grantees, which have wider institutional building lessons for organisations working in the region;
  • Share respective tools that have been utilised; and
  • Use the process to strengthen writing skills across the partners by developing a collective resource.

The time frame for the project is 29 May 2012 to 29 March 2013.  
 
Scope of work

The Book Project Manager will be responsible for the following:

  • Design the project management timeline and methodology using the conceptual framework;
  • Assist partners to draft chapters in line with the conceptual framework;
  • Manage the submission of chapters from various authors including but not limited to coordinating the circulation of    chapters for comments, review and editing to the CGI team;
  • Work in collaboration with OSISA communications manager to design layout of the book.

Requirements of your proposal

Your proposal should include the following:

  • A short resume documenting your qualifications and track record in terms of undertaking this type of work;
  • A one page discussion of how this project would be implemented;
  • A detailed budget and time-frame;
  • An example of an independent writing project.
 Time frames
  • Proposals should be submitted to OSISA no later than 20 April 2012;
  • The successful applicant will commence work no later than 29 May 2012.
