KwaZulu-Natal Civil Society Organisation Coalition (KZNCSOC)
A strong civil society is the spine of a solid and working democracy. Oftentimes though we hear that civil society is weak, fragmented and poorly organised. It was against this backdrop that a group of civil society role players came together to work with the idea of developing a robust civil society coalition. The idea was not to replicate, but to collaborate in order to consolidate the voice of the whole non-government/not for profit sector within KwaZulu-Natal. This has led to the birth of the KwaZulu-Natal Civil Society Organisation Coalition, KZNCSOC in short.
KZNCSOC invites all NGOs/NPOs and/or civil society organisations with offices in KZN to join KZNCSOC which is an all-inclusive civil society initiative aimed at harnessing the collective strength and wisdom of civil society. The purpose of this Coalition was in the acknowledgement of the challenges and possibilities facing civil society organisations, and the need to come together as an organised sector with a common vision and voice.
Membership and membership fees to KZNCSOC are free and open to all civil society organisations that subscribe to its values, mission and objectives; including those that are still in the process of becoming compliant with governmental guidelines. What is required by the Coalition is an organisations ability to show the existence of its constitution, be active and display procedures in place to have the entity formalised. We are allowing a window period until 31 July 2015 for organisations to comply with the registration formalities with the Department of Social Development and South African Revenue Services. Advice will be given on which regulatory bodies to register with, the formalities required for the forming of a legal entity, the process involved right up to registration and what is expected of the organisation to function as a compliant civil society organisation.
- KZNCSOC is a membership driven and a people centred initiative;
- Members benefit through sharing of expertise, experiences, resources (skills, knowledge, equipment, etc.), engage its constituencies more effectively, explore new ways to engage Government where it matters most and provide a platform for debate and engagement on matters of common interest;
- There is a full time professional Secretariat dedicated to co-ordinate the activities of KZNCSOC. This is a crucial requirement to make KZNCSOC successful. It is well known that other attempts at forming coalitions have failed due to no Secretariat being made available on a permanent basis.
