The Action Volunteers Africa (AVA) programme encourages young South Africans to become vibrant, involved citizens who take responsibility for their own development and who, through their own sustained efforts, have a better chance of progressing successfully and entering the world of work.

AVA seeks to appoint Volunteers to work as tutors in the pilot Volunteers GAP Programme, based in Western Cape.

The Western Cape Government is partnering with Action Volunteers Africa, IkamvaYouth and The Shine Centre to implement an after-school academic enrichment programme with learners in underperforming schools. The programme will be implemented in selected schools with MOD centres. The aim is to ensure numeracy and literacy in the primary schools and significant academic improvement and matric results in high schools. The programme will also assist learners to build the skills they need to take their futures into their own hands.

Duration: September - November 2014.

The programme will be formally launched in February 2015. The rollout will include a full leadership development programme for volunteers.

The successful candidate should be young and passionate about the power of education to transform lives, a high achiever and leader, someone who wants to make a real contribution towards positive change in South Africa and is not currently working or studying and is looking for something to do for the rest of the year.

Requirements:

  • Personal initiative, courage, leadership and an ability to manage oneself’s;
  • Minimum of a matric certificate with good pass in English and Mathematics, graduates are encouraged to apply;
  • Basic computer skills;
  • Demonstrated commitment to making a difference and impacting on the lives of others.

Volunteers for the pilot programme will be paid a stipend and need to commit to working full time from 1 September - 30 November 2014.
