Focus Areas

New or improved approaches to increasing early access to existing pregnancy termination Introducing or increasing early access to manual vacuum aspiration (MVA) and/or medical abortion (MA). This includes but is not limited to the following:

  1. Decentralizing and de-medicalizing abortion care
  2. Reclassifying existing abortion methods to fit within relevant regulatory frameworks
  3. Reframing and normalizing abortion to combat stigma
  4. Increasing the number of trained providers and available safe services
  5. Reducing economic barriers to accessing safe abortion
  6. Improving access to information that will help a girl, woman, or person with a diverse sexual and gender identity to safely terminate a pregnancy

Note: Only institutions legally incorporated in a low- or middle-income country (see Appendix A of the Request for Proposal) are eligible to apply to the ‘increasing access to existing methods of pregnancy termination' focus area.

Next generation methods - Introducing a next generation method of safe abortion that provides one or more significant improvements over existing methods, including:

  1. Equal or better effectiveness at terminating pregnancy over existing methods
  2. Permissive within existing regulatory frameworks (e.g., it has other primary indications)
  3. Ability for self-administration with greater autonomy and privacy
  4. Cost effective relative to current safe methods
  5. Ease of use/compliance (e.g., single pill administration)
  6. Reduced side effects and pain
  7. The ability to be effectively administered early or at later stages of gestation

Please note that this is the target product profile for next generation methods of safe abortion. Both pre-clinical and clinical stage proposals are eligible, and project objectives for the 18-to-24-month grant period will be tailored accordingly.
