Health-e News Service is South Africa’s award-winning dedicated health news service producing news and in-depth analysis for the country’s print, television and online media. In 2012, Health-e News opened a nationwide citizen journalism arm called “OurHealth”, which provides print features for newspapers, magazines and websites, and TV documentaries broadcast on SABC, eTV and M-Net.

Health-e News Services seeks to appoint News Editor to be based in Johannesburg.
 
Main responsibilities:

  • Assist and support Health-E News to deliver journalism to an audience online
  • Generate a daily diary 
  • Monitor news sources (wire services, websites, other newspapers, broadcast media)
  • Communicate with other department heads to further editorial mission
  • Leads community engagement efforts. 
  • Edit copy and commission staff, freelancers and Community Journalists (CJs) within budget
  • Post daily (social media or website) with the expectation to meet minimum goals set
  • To keep a record of stories generated by freelancers and CJs and to work manage payments
  • Assist in the management and motivation of the news team
  • Establish good working relationships with colleagues and external contacts
  • Manage and advise on legal issues as they arise
  • Develop and expand digital footprint for news operations, including monitoring practices and submissions required for online news certification 
  • Manage Newsletter and WhatsApp newsletter

Skills:

  • Experience in WordPress and HTML
  • Writing and commissioning

Education/experience:

  • Should have some experience in Health journalism
  • University degree preferred
  • Minimum three years news or related editing experience required 

 Shifts
Weekends, holidays and varied hours required. 
Salary is in line with experience.
 
Preference will be given to candidates from previously disadvantaged groups.
