CHAPS is one of the largest and proudly South African non-government organisations (NGO) focused on voluntary medical male circumcision (VMMC) as HIV prevention on the African continent. Through its pioneering work in the research and promotion of voluntary medical male circumcision scale-up activities, CHAPS has successfully implemented and disseminated sustainable evidence-based health solutions throughout South Africa and the region. 

CHAPS seeks to appoint Counsellors, to be based at Johannesburg:

  • Alexandra
  • Soweto
  • Orange Farm
  • Midvaal
  • Lesedi
  • Sedibeng / Emfulweni


  • Initiate HIV counselling and testing to all clients
  • Conduct counselling sessions as per PICT protocols
  • Assist clients in the selection of appropriate community support services including index referral
  • Ensure that counselling room / gazebo is well equipped to provide high quality testing services
  • Carry out rapid HIV tests according to approved testing protocols
  • Record and report accurate HIV test results to clients
  • Liaise with linkage officer in regard to reactive clients
  • Update the HTS register for all clients tested  
  • Refer all discordant test results to nearest facility for further management
  • Monitor stock levels for rapid test kits and related commodities in the counselling room / gazebo
  • Ensure that the counselling room and working stations are cleaned and orderly at all times
  • Ensure that the quality assurance specimens are properly packaged and shipped
  • Ensure that all hazardous materials are disposed of properly and according to protocol
  • Carry out any other duties assigned by the Senior Counsellor
  • Participate in quality assurance and improvement visits
  • Ensure adherence to infection control protocols
  • Ensure compliance with quality assurance procedures
  • Ensure that clients’ information is properly and accurately recorded and reported
  • Ensure clients confidential information is kept secured
  • Ensure all data tools are given to the Senior Counsellor daily


  • Trained as a HIV and AIDS Counsellor
  • Pricking Certificate
  • Basic counselling
  • Minimum of two years’ experience as an HTS counsellor
