Masifundise Development Trust (Masifundise) is a civil society organisation with a long track record in the small-scale fishing sector. Its aim is to promote and advance Food Sovereignty in small-scale fishing communities in South Africa, and globally.  Masifundise is currently looking for Board Members to join and refresh our existing Board. 

Overview

The Masifundise Development Trust (Masifundise) is a civil society organisation with a long track record in the small-scale fishing sector. Its aim is to promote and advance Food Sovereignty in small-scale fishing communities in South Africa, and globally. It aims to do this by empowering fishers and community-based activists to become agents of change within their own communities, organisations, and social movements, as well as facilitating and strengthening participatory governance (at Municipality and Provincial levels); enabling fishing communities to secure their social, economic, and political rights; and, promoting principles of social, economic and environmental justice and the right to autonomy and sovereignty of civil society.  

To achieve these goals Masifundise has developed three integrated programmes areas aligned with its vision and mission:

  • Inland Community Fisheries;
  • Coastal Livelihoods;
  • Capacity Building and Popular Education in fishing communities.

Masifundise is currently looking for Board Members to join and refresh our existing Board. Please note the following:

  • This is a voluntary role in the organisation and therefore not remunerated
  • Previous experience on an NGO/CSO board is essential
  • An ability to network and be an ambassador for Masifundise is essential
  • An understanding or familiarity with our area of focus will be advantageous
  • Strong contacts within the community and wider civil society will be advantageous

Commitments required:

  • Understand and support Masifundise’s vision, mission, values, policies, and strategies
  • Attend regular board meetings (four per financial year)
  • Participate actively in meeting discussions and follow through with suggestions
  • Be involved in the planning of short and long-term strategies that will best benefit the organisation, including following up on these plans as needed with the management team
  • Be able to offer advice and guidance relevant to their specific area of expertise/knowledge
  • Assist where possible in fundraising, fundraising events, and development of existing or new donor relationships
  • Network on behalf of Masifundise and help to develop strategic partnerships
  • Maintain the highest level of confidentiality in the interests of the organisation
  • Act as an ambassador for Masifundise

Requirements:

  • Understanding and experience in Governance
  • Someone with good understanding and appreciation of the challenges and opportunities on offer in relation to civil society organisations
  • Be a strategic thinker
  • Well established networks with organisations, and contacts with potential donors
  • Prepared to assist with ideas and suggestions for funding opportunities or collaborations
  • Prepared to be involved in fundraising events that Masifundise holds as far as possible (networking, ideas for events, spreading the word about these events in their personal networks)
