The Nisaa institute for Women’s Development (henceforth referred to as Nisaa) is a non-profit, non-governmental organisation, which focuses on violence prevention and the empowerment of women who have been abused at the hands of their partners. The organisation was launched in March 1994, by a group of committed women activists, with assistance from the Frauen-Anstiftung (FAS).
Initially, an office was established in Lenasia a suburb 30 kilometers south of Johannesburg. An outreach office was established in South Africa’s largest township, Soweto, in 1996. This followed by the establishment of an office in Orange Farm in 1998, on request from the Orange Farm community as the demand and need for our service in the community was rising.

It is Nisaa’s vision to enable women and children to live in a world free of violence and discrimination by promoting women’s rights through empowerment, advocacy, service delivery, collaborative partnerships and having a transformative agenda in dealing with violence against women at local, regional and international levels. As such Nisaa’s work looks at both prevention and therapy.
The organisation is looking to recruit members of civil society to serve on Nisaa’s Board. Please note that serving on the Board is completely voluntary. There is no remuneration or financial compensation of any kind. Nisaa is looking for candidates with a range of skills and experience. These are listed below:

  • General
    • An understanding of NGOs and how they operate
    • Board experience
    • Passionate and committed to the eradication of violence and discrimination against women and girls
    • Willingness to act as an ambassador for Nisaa
    • Willingness to fulfil the fiduciary duties and uphold ethical standards of conduct as required of a board member of a registered non-profit organisation
    • Understand the plight of women and girls in current contexts
    • Availability to attend quarterly meetings and on occasion the be called upon to sign funding contracts on behalf of the organisation and participate in big events and fundraising activities. (other expectations are noted below)
    • Responsive to emails and other communication
  • Skills
    • Ability to understand and interrogate financial reports
    • Strategic planning skills
    • Risk management skills
    • Analytical skills
    • Ability to operate as a team
    • Ability to network and advocate on behalf of the organisation.
  • Experience (in at least one of the areas listed below)
    • Experience in financial management
    • Fundraising (e.g. from individuals, businesses, corporate companies or other)
    • Media, communications or PR (including social media)
    • Understanding of issues related to Human Resources

Board members are expected to:

  • Attend four board meetings a year and an annual general meeting. Board meetings are generally held at the organisations head office
  • Participate in the organisation’s strategic review and planning sessions which happen every three to five years
  • Assist in fund raising for the organisation
  • Participate in sub-committees and guide the organisation towards better heights.
  • Be committed to the organisation and be able to give a reasonable amount of time and attention to the organisation
