Afrika Tikkun seeks to appoint a ECD Toy Librarian, to be based in Johannesburg:

Report to: ECD Principal

Purpose of the position is to actively engage with the Early Childhood Development centre to promote the toy library to encourage its use and to promote educational play opportunities to children.



  • Draw up goals for the use of the library, outreach, and number of workshops
  • Evaluate regularly and revise the plan of action as necessary
  • Self-Assessments on registers, stock registers, weekly stats forms, filing system electronic and hard copies


  • Conduct workshops with staff and others from the organisation, E.C.D. centres, parents etc. on the importance of play, the use of toys to develop skills and knowledge and how to play with the toys


  • Establish positive relationships with children, parents and other staff
  • Cooperate with colleagues in order to maintain a good teaching standard

Programme Development and Implementation

  • Plan age-appropriate activities on a weekly basis for the Toy Library and try to include the “Theme” for the week
  • Prepare and setting out all the educational activities and materials needed the day before


  • Play with the children, facilitating and supporting play when necessary
  • Update knowledge by reading books and journals, observing children
  • Record of what age group plays with which toys


  • Issue and receive toys
  • Repair toys
  • Stocktaking (annually /bi-annually)
  • Keep control of toys-files /cards
  • Count pieces and update cards
  • Statistics about users
  • Maintain clerical systems that ensure an efficient and effective service
  • Coordinate and update manual and electronic records to maintain high level of accuracy for data and reports as and when required

Marketing and promotion of toy library

  • Assist with the promotion of Toy Library service to parents and ECD staff members

Maintenance and stock control

  • Process new stock by:
    • Preparation of toys
    • Lending of toys
    • Facilitate play sessions
    • Cleaning and maintenance of toys
    • Cleaning and preparation of play rooms


  • Use safe methods / techniques for shifting or lifting heavy equipment
  • Develop recovery systems to prevent permanent loss or damage


  • Matric/NQF level 4
  • ECD practitioner qualification advantageous
  • Minimum of two years’ experience working with children 0 to 9 years would be advantageous
  • Experience in prepare and organising play activities for children aged 0 to 6 years would be advantageous
  • Communication skills (verbal, written, interpersonal) preferably in English 
  • Organisational and planning skills
  • Ability to deal with customers and service users
  • Ability to be flexible and have a good and willing attitude to adapt to change and working effectively in a variety of different situations
  • Ability to be proactive and manage your duties, and take ownership and responsibility to achieve the desired results
  • Attention to detail, ensure that work is completed with great care and that every detail is taken care of timeously
  • Team player, ability to work with various stakeholders to obtain the required information and buy-in for various activities and projects arranged
