Gender DynamiX (GDX) is a human rights organisation promoting freedom of expression of gender identity, focusing in transgender, transsexual and gender non-conforming identities Founded in 2005, GDX is the first organisation within Africa that specifically advocates for transgender individuals. Gender DynamiX, as part of the KP REACH consortium is implementing a three year regional programme in eight countries in Southern Africa, funded by the Global Fund.

Gender DynamiX seeks to appoint a Regional Advocacy Officer, to be based in Cape Town.


  • Lead the design process for regional projects
  • Support regional partners and organisations in need of capacity enhancement support comprehensively understand trans and gender diversity, write funding proposals and support proper implementation of their in-country programs
  • Manage the partner relationships with specialist partners and specialist volunteers nationally and in the region for the benefit of the general trans movement in the region
  • Liaise with the Programmes Manager to manage program staffing and/or bring in external program personnel where necessary for projects
  • Design and implement an Monitoring and Evaluation plan for various projects and programs, by developing forms and records to document program activities
  • Develop and monitor grant agreements, prepare and finalise project reports
  • Advise the Programmes Manager on relevant changes to enhance the regional program where appropriate
  • Work to ensure timely narrative reports are prepared and issued to the Programmes Manager and relevant stakeholders
  • Engage with inter-governmental governing bodies and human rights mechanisms from the region and internationally to influence their thinking, policies and practices to benefit the trans movement
  • Ensure effective dissemination of practical guidance, best practices and lessons learnt from regional programs and projects to all key players and beneficiaries within the region and beyond through workshops, lectures and trainings
  • Participate in regional and international dialogues so as to inform regional and international policy debate and formulation, including media discussions on trans issues in the region or globally
  • Facilitate regional scholarly research on transgender issues and concepts in consultation with the Researcher
  • Assist in the implementation of other programs and projects nationally as may be required by the Programmes Manager
  • Assist the Programmes Manager in various tasks relating to advocacy, trainings and dialogue at national, regional and international level as may be required
  • As required by the Executive Director to conduct internal training on lessons learnt and observations made on transgender issues and concepts arising regionally and internationally


  • Bachelor’s degree in Project Management, Strategic Management, Social Sciences, International Relations, Human Rights Law or any other relevant discipline
  • Relevant experience in the trans advocacy field will be considered in place of formal education qualifications
  • Minimum of three years’ experience doing advocacy at national or regional level
  • Advanced management skills to plan, manage and coordinate projects, partners, people, and budgets
  • Organisation, writing, analytical and administrative skills
  • Confident in using information and communication technology
  • Experience and deep understanding of Human Rights and development sector work
  • Experience in working with trans, gender and body diverse persons and communities highly desirable
  • Understanding and/or engagement with policy and legal advocacy and reform
  • Knowledge of working with or using regional and international human rights mechanisms
  • Understanding of the sub-regional and continental trans movement and movement building initiatives highly sought
  • Personal attributes and knowledge

  • Knowledge and understanding of issues of human rights, social justice, with a passion for community development, understanding and concern for issues affecting Key Populations and the greater trans and gender diverse community
  • Interest or passion for concepts of gender, sex, gender identity and diversity as well as body and sexual diversity
  • Displays strong cultural, gender, religion, race, nationality and age sensitivity and adaptability
  • Experience of managing and delivering training and capacity building of staff of differing skills and abilities
  • Organised, efficient and methodical
  • Ability to work alone, show initiative, and manage diverse teams with a transparent, accountable and consultative style
  • Ability to effectively work in a team and groups of gender and sexually diverse identities and expressions
  • Ability to work with people from various countries with varying languages, cultures and identities
  • Proficient in writing and speaking English
  • Be prepared and able to travel
  • Ability to plan, prioritise and deliver tasks on time
