The CGSO was established to guide the consumer goods and services industry as to what is considered the minimum standards of conduct expected and to assist in resolving disputes that arise between consumers and suppliers in terms of the Consumer Protection Act (CPA).
The CGSO enforces the Consumer Goods and Services Industry Code of Conduct by receiving and dealing with consumer goods complaints by a consumer free of charge and investigating alleged contraventions.
Based in Johannesburg, Consumer Goods and Services Ombud seeks to appoint the
OMBUDSMAN (3 day a week appointment)

To apply the appropriate dispute resolution skills and ensure sound relationships with all stakeholders, this role includes overseeing of the Ombud office and ensuring efficient service delivery.    

Key responsibilities for this position include:

  • Overseeing the day to day running of the organisation through management meetings and reports from the management team
  • Overseeing the performance of CEO and Complaints Manager
  • Overseeing the application of the Consumer Goods and Services Industry Code relating to the receiving and adjudication of complaints
  • Drafting recommendations where mediation and facilitation has failed and providing guidance on complex cases
  • Issuing guidelines for the implementation & application of the Code by participants
  • Attending to complex media enquiries
  • Drafting of the Quarterly Report and dissemination of the Annual Report
  • Providing strategic input to the Board on the effective implementation of the Code
  • Making recommendations to the Board for any necessary amendments to Code and/or MOI of the CGSO

The Ombudsman must be able to demonstrate:

  • Qualified and experienced in economics, commerce and industry and public affairs
  • At least ten years’ experience in a senior executive role relating to alternative dispute resolution or an ombudsman office
  • Manage and lead a service-driven organisation
  • Sound leadership qualities
  • Demonstrate high levels of competency, capability and financial soundness
  • Litigation and drafting skills required
  • A legal qualification will be an added advantage
  • A fit and proper person who is honest and has impeccable integrity
  • Applicant must not have worked in the industry for at least 3 years
