Open Africa is a nonprofit social enterprise established 21 years ago to help rural entrepreneurs see what is unique and valuable about their community and to use this to generate income and create jobs through tourism.

Open Africa seeks to appoint a General Manager, to be based in Cape Town.

Report to:  Board of directors

The purpose for this position is to be responsible for the implementation of the objectives captured in Open Africa’s growth strategy, crafting and implementing new strategies as and when required, lead the business development and fundraising activities of the organisation, develop fundraising strategies and execute these effectively and oversee the financial management of the organisation.


  • Management of daily operations
  • Lead the continuous strategic thinking, positioning, and direction of Open Africa and provide overall strategic management
  • Recruit, motivate and manage all staff, including the development of key performance goals
  • Design and constantly refine Open Africa programmes with project managers
  • Recruit and manage relationships with implementation partners
  • Overseeing the entire fundraising function and ensure that all team members contribute to the financial growth of the organisation
  • Implement a donor management and retention plan which includes personal meetings, site visits and reporting
  • Create and oversee project work plans and revise as appropriate to meet changing needs and requirements
  • Identify resources needed for specific projects and assign individual responsibilities
  • Manage project reviews and oversee the compilation of reports (both narrative and financial
  • Ensure that operational systems and procedures are in place to enable effective management


  • Minimum of eight years senior organisational leadership and management experience in the development sector
  • Fundraising experience and strong financial acumen
  • Tertiary qualification in a related field
  • Ability to speak, read, and writing skills in English
  • Ability to work with partner organisation and communities
  • South African citizenship or permanent residence status
  • Own transport and valid Code 8 driver’s license
  • Interpersonal skills at all levels
  • Well established experience with stakeholder engagement and management, including donors
  • Ability to travel nationally and regionally when required
  • Understand and experience in developing networks and partnerships
  • Problem-solving skills
  • Ability to work in a diverse team and respect the culture and values of the organisation
  • Ability to work under pressure and set priorities
  • Strong organisational and programme management skills
  • Flexibility in terms of working hours based on organisational requirements
  • Computer literacy
  • Ability to self-manage and high sense of personal insight and maturity
  • Experience in monitoring and evaluation
