Since WeThinkCode_ launched in 2016, the company has successfully opened two campuses in Johannesburg and Cape Town. As we embark in a new growth journey and scale across Africa, we are looking for a strong executive team to support us in achieving our mission.
The purpose of the CFO is to manage the organisation’s various finance functions, including finance and accounting, financial planning and analysis, regulatory and risk management, grant funding and investment activities. The CFO will also work closely with the CEO and the Board of Directors as they develop their unique strategies and tactics for long-term impact across the African continent. The CFO will report to the CEO and serve as the liaison to the Board of Directors on financial issues.
The ideal candidate has relevant prior experience of financial management in the public services or non-profit sector. This role will require a strong understanding of non profit finance and its regulatory environment. The ideal CFO is driven to tackle the challenge of leading the Pan-African development of an innovative non-profit edtech start-up. This role will require excellent analytical skills, sound judgement and a keen grasp of how finance influences strategy, how to mitigate risks, and lay a solid foundation for growth.
Key responsibilities:

  • Participate in key decisions as a member of the WTC executive team to develop and oversee the long-term business strategies of the company.
  • Providing the financial lead to the strategic planning process, including: annual budgets, periodic forecasts and funding requirements. 

  • Collating, preparing and interpreting reports, budgets, accounts, commentaries and financial statements.
  • Undertaking research into pricing, competitors and factors affecting performance.
  • Controlling income, cash flow and expenditure, ensuring these activities fall within the budget.
  • Helping to ensure that WeThinkCode_ achieves value for money across all its activities.
  • Develop and implement all the finance, procurement and asset policies and procedures.
  • Developing and managing financial systems and models.
  • Carrying out business modelling and risk assessments.
  • Manage relationship with outsourced accounting consultant, including reviewing the monthly Actual vs Budget accounting reports at the end of each month, including financial narrative, and variance analysis, when necessary, discuss with budget holders and advise CEO.
  • Proactively manage the organisation’s relationship with its bankers, to ensure that appropriate and efficient systems are in place for WTC’s accounting procedures.
  • Proactively manage the cash position of the organisation and its operating activities, and reporting regularly on this aspect of financial management to the executive team.

  • Ensure that that WTC follows best practice in terms of financial governance, and ensure the probity, and legislative compliance, of all financial transactions, including payroll and cash handling, and the integrity and suitability of all control mechanisms (audit and risk management). 

  • Develop and review all accounting and financial internal control systems in order to meet the requirements of internal and external audit, and in accordance with SARS, CIPC, SETA and BEE compliance requirements.
  • Review and take legal advice to ensure that all contracts entered into by WTC and implement the procedures for awarding contracts in accordance with relevant legal requirements, and do not represent a risk to WTC.
  • To take appropriate measure to prevent fraud and inappropriate expenditure taking place, and should this occur to take the lead in investigating and responding appropriately.
  • Manage relationships with certain partners / vendors.
  • Lead grant funding applications for strategic partnerships and support CEO with corporate & investor relations and sales where required.
  • Review donor reports in accordance with the donor requirements.
  • Review annual financial statements prepared for external audit, and discuss with external auditors.
  • Assist the CEO with preparation for Board meetings and donor/partner presentations.
  • Report to the Board of Directors on all financial matters.

Skills and experience required:

  • CA (SA) or equivalent qualification.
  • 5 to 10 years’ experience in working in a complex financial environment, preferably in the non profit world in a senior management role.
  • Ability to propose new direction for strategy execution in a growth environment.
  • Demonstrates excellence in implementing rigorous and disciplined financial controls, financial management systems, and performance measures/metrics that benchmark performance and create accountability.
  • Experience in development of systems and tools for efficient financial management and reporting.
  • Experience in donor audits at all levels. Understanding of budgeting, financial and contract management.
  • Experience of preparing proposals to donors and donor reporting requirements.
  • Excellent analytical skills and sound judgment.
  • Advanced skills in computers – Windows, spreadsheets, accounting packages and word processing.
  • Experience of writing narrative & financial reports, presenting to Board and/or Finance Committees.
  • Experience in donor audits at all levels. Understanding of budgeting, financial and contract management.
  • Ability to operate in a complex organisation, across functions and countries and work on own initiative and collaboratively as part of diverse teams.
  • Outcome focused and proven ability to think strategically and plan, prioritise and organise a department/team’s work to meet organisation-wide strategic objectives.
  • Knowledge of contract law.
  • Computer literate (MS Office) and advanced Microsoft excel.
  • Ability to work with diverse cultures and communities.
  • Have great communication, writing and reporting skills.
  • Be able to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Show initiative and be deadline-driven.
  • Have good planning and organisational skills.
  • Positive attitude, assertive and confident leader.
