VPUU NPC is a Public Benefit Organisation implementing multisectoral integrated area based upgrading programmes of neighbourhoods in townships and informal settlements. This is done in partnership with communities, municipalities, provincial and national government.

We work in an integrated team of community participation, socio economic development, operation and maintenance, planning and design, infrastructure development, and knowledge management towards sustainable urban neighbourhoods. For our team we are looking for an:

R216.000 p.a., R18.000 per month
Fixed term contract 01.07.2018 - 30.06.2019, initially

Job Purpose:
The IT Expert will be responsible for monitoring and maintaining the computer systems and networks of the organisation and within communities we work in.
The person must be able to install and configure computer systems, wifi systems, diagnose hardware and software faults and solve technical and applications problems, either over the phone or in person. In addition the person needs to be able to conduct computer lessons for community members on standard software packages and oversee a computer lab for youth.
Key performance areas:

  • Maintains software and hardware inventory and tracking systems; develops inventory lists and orders, stocks and stores electronic components;
  • Configures and sets up servers to work with various programs; installs software. Ensures server backups and networked user backups are performed on a regular basis;
  • Troubleshooting system and network problems and diagnosing and solving hardware or software faults;
  • Providing support, including procedural documentation and relevant reports;
  • Supporting the roll-out of new applications;
  • Setting up new users' accounts and profiles and dealing with password issues;
  • Responding within agreed time limits to call-outs;
  • Establishing a good working relationship with colleagues and other professionals;
  • Testing and evaluating new technology;
  • Conducting safety checks on equipment
  • Set up and maintenance of wifi networks in communities
  • Conduct trainings on standard software packages
  • Oversee a computer lab most likely in Khayelitsha for youth to use for gaming, computer skills development
  • Oversee capturing of databases of job seekers

In addition to the core delivery areas above, it is anticipated that the incumbent will also show interest and abilities relating to the following projects

  • Partnership development with tertiary institutions service providers on IT projects;
  • Application (software) development and research to support fieldwork & systems;
  • Maintenance and upgrading of mobile devices;
  • Website technical support & maintenance;
  • Assistance with biometric devices to track participation in project work;
  • Drone maintenance & deployment for imagery acquisition;
  • WIFI deployment, maintenance & management in project locations;
  • Salesforce deployment/integration


  • B degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, B Tech in Information Technology, B.Com Information System;
  • The ability to work as a member of a team and influence wider stakeholders groups
  • Strong leadership and negotiation skills;
  • Proven training skills;
  • Effective oral/written communication skills in at least 2 of the following languages: English, isiXhosa, Afrikaans
  • Commitment to meet deadlines in a pressured environment;
  • Strong problem-solving and analytical skills, as well as creativity and the ability to work with abstract concepts;
  • Interpersonal skills to support interaction and collaboration amongst the team;
  • Convey complex ideas and concepts to all levels;
  • Pursues self-development and learning of emerging technologies and best practices in field;
  • Valid Code EB drivers’ license
