St. George’s Cathedral known as 'the people's Cathedral' for its role in the resistance against apartheid, is the oldest cathedral in Southern Africa and the mother church of the Anglican Diocese of Cape Town.

St George's Cathedral seeks to appoint an Administrative Assistant in the Office of the Dean of Cape Town.

Working hours: 09:00 to 17:00, Monday to Friday (some after-hours work required)

Start date: 01 February 2018


  • Communication with a variety of stakeholders including clergy, parishioners, Diocesan staff, civil society organisations, members of government and the diplomatic corps as well as the general public. This includes face-to-face communication, telephonic and electronic communication as appropriate
  • Provide welcoming point of contact for all staff
  • Support the written communication needs of the Dean’s office

 Coordination of administrative needs of the Dean’s office

  • Provide high level confidential administrative and secretarial support to the Dean’s office which includes the management of his diary and coordinating travel arrangements when required
  • Maintain an efficient and realistically-planned diary in consultation with the Dean
  • Establish and maintain an efficient and effective record keeping system for the Dean's office in both digital and paper formats
  • Attend to all correspondence and communications timeously and efficiently
  • Ensure that the Dean is at all times kept informed of all matters requiring his attention
  • Work in collaboration with the Cathedral Administrator in relation to administrative, financial and related matters as required
  • Ensure the distribution of preparatory documents for meetings and conferences and ensuring that the Dean has these at hand ahead of meetings that he is required to attend
  • Assist the Dean in managing his workflow to ensure that all commitments are timeously honoured
  • Secretarial duties related to Cathedral meetings, as directed by the Dean 
  • Assist with day to day Cathedral office administration as directed by the Dean


  • Tertiary qualification in Office Administration or equivalent
  • Working knowledge of the latest version of the Microsoft Office suite of programmes which include Office, Excel, PowerPoint and Publisher
  • Interpersonal and communication skills
  • Ability to deal with confidential information with discretion and respect
  • Close attention to detail
  • Efficient at implementing and maintaining systems
  • Ability to function in a team and also able to self-manage and work independently
  • Minimum five years in office administration
