AFRA is a leading land rights organisation in South Africa, having been established in 1979 to oppose the eviction of black people under Apartheid legisaltion and policies. Today, we continue to serve the interests and needs of rural people, with a primary focus on farm dwellers. We are seeking to appoint a skilled individual to join our dynamic, growing team in this exciting new role.

AFRA seeks to appoint a Researcher and Policy Coordinator to be based in Pietermaritzburg

Reports to: Programmes Manager

Start Date: Immediately

Salary range: R220 000 to R260 000 p.a

The purpose of this position is to undertake land reform, land tenure and rural development policy analysis and research within AFRA


Policy Research

  • Scan and monitor land related policy & legislation
  • Identify implications of policy and policy shifts for the land sector
  • Analyse and interpret legislation and policy


  • Work collaboratively with AFRA’s Communications team to convey agreed AFRA policy positions in multiple mediums
  • Engage with relevant stakeholders and networks

 Coordination: AFRA Pathways Project

  • Coordinate the project team and activities
  • Manage project budget and planning
  • Oversee project reporting
  • Oversee the integration, management and analysis of core data sets
  • Provide logistical and communication support


  • To report to, and be accountable to the Programmes Manager
  • Prepare regular reports in the required formats
  • Attend all organisational and external meetings as required
  • Implement AFRA’s mission, vision and strategy
  • Exhibit a clear understanding of gender issues
  • Develop and maintain appropriate stakeholder relations and partnership
  • Adhere to and apply all AFRA’s Policy and Procedures
  • Undertake project field trips and other travel, including nationally and internationally, as required

 Co-ordination of research and policy

  • Plan, implement, monitor and co-ordinate AFRA’s Pathways project activities
  • Lead on the development of legislation and policy critique, best-practice analysis, benchmarking, evidence-based submission, and advocating for alternative models
  • Monitor of the relevant legislative and policy environment to enable effective and timely response
  • Prepare and package research and policy programme work for communication purposes
  • Oversee the integration of the Pathways survey data set with the AFRA Case Management System database, and the management and analysis of these data sets
  • Lead internal engagement on policy and research, as well as engagement with strategic partners to leverage optimal networking and knowledge sharing
  • Ensure that all research and policy programme work remains within the agreed timeframes and budgets
  • Identify the resource needs the programme and the appropriate agencies and individuals that can meet these needs
  • Ensure the high quality of project work being undertaken
  • Participate in the monitoring and evaluation of the project work
  • Pro-actively identifying new research needs and priorities


  • Post graduate degree in Social Sciences, Agrarian, Land and Development Studies or related field
  • Minimum of three years work experience in policy and research
  • Proven experience in the development and writing policy briefs, research reports and advocacy materials
  • Proven track record in report writing
  • Experience in land rights
  • Ability to perform well under pressure, work independently and as part of a team
  • Ability to problem solve and mediate between different stakeholders
  • Valid drivers licence
  • Writing and reporting skills
  • Proven experience in budgeting and project based financial reporting
  • Strong isiZulu & English language skills, both verbal and written
  • Be willing to travel and work weekends/after-hours
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word (Excel, Outlook and PowerPoint)
