SECTION27 is at the forefront of human rights activism in South Africa. It is a public interest law centre and seeks to use the law to protect, promote and advance human rights. The organisation's activities include litigation, research and advocacy to advance and promote the rights to have access to health care services, basic education and food, as guaranteed by the South African Constitution.

SECTION27 seeks to appoint a Paralegal, based in Braamfontein, Johannesburg


  • Be the primary point of contact for all persons seeking legal advice and assistance. This will include:
  • Recording all relevant personal, contact and case details
  • Taking complete statements
  • Providing sound legal advice and assistance
  • Manage the referral of enquiries to the attorneys, private firms and other organisations where appropriate
  • Manage an up to date system of recording, reconciling and tracking all enquiries received and referred
  • Maintain an accessible, up-to-date and user-friendly database of the names and contact details of all relevant stakeholders and the services offered by each
  • Prepare and submit detailed weekly, monthly and quarterly reports on all enquiries received
  • Conduct ad hoc legal research and other general legal tasks when requested


  • A track record demonstrating knowledge of the law and human rights law in particular
  • Must have strong administrative, research and writing skills
  • Ability to think independently and take initiative
  • Must possess good time management and multi-tasking skills
  • Demonstrable communication, interpersonal and listening skills
  • An ability to provide sound legal and other advice to general members of the public in writing, in person or over the phone
  • Competency in multiple South African languages (English and Zulu essential) and strong writing skills
  • Candidate should be suitably qualified for the position, must have legal training – an LLB would be an advantage
  •  Prior experience in human rights work and/or public health related legal research is preferred
