Township Patterns is a unique social enterprise in the meetings, incentives, conferences and events (MICE) producing eco-friendly handmade bags. The range is made by fair trade women’s cooperatives in the townships in South Africa. Each item sold brings economic improvement and opportunity for sustainable development to the women and their communities. Township Patters is a member if the World Fair Trade Organisation promoting good working conditions, payment of a fair price and also respect for the environment.

Township Patterns seeks to appoint a Cooperative Development Officer to be based in Cape Town.

The Cooperative development officer will be in charge of managing and developing the co-op network as well as looking after the development of the Cooperative’s
members working with all the various components of the programme.

Travels: Regular local travel into cooperatives in Khayelitsha and Manenberg and ultimately Johannesburg

Reporting to: Morgane Cariot – Operations Manager
 
Working hours: 08h30 to 17h00, Monday to Friday
 
Contract: Permanent
 
Start date: As soon as possible

Responsibilities:
 
Implementation of  adequate training programs:

  • With the Township Service Level Agreement (SLA) audit and the Poverty Stoplight Methodology (PSM) implementation
  • Supervision of the PSM implementation and the audit of the SLA
  • Analysis of both results
  • Define the necessary training programs with identified cooperatives
  • Link with suitable organisations to implement the programs and monitor these
  • Establish an induction program for new cooperatives and new members of the cooperatives
  • Facilitate training and use a reporting tool to measure the success of the training programs
  • Establish a monthly report for each coop

 Cooperative development model – training program accreditation

  • Training curriculum for each stage of the cooperative
  • Programmes implementations
  • Establish strong Partnership with organisations
  • Evaluation tools
  • Reporting tools

 Management of “Cooperative development funds”

  • Propose a budget for application of funds
  • Report on the spending and application of the funds

 Events Organisation:

  • Promote Women’s Day, Fair Trade Day, Mandela day, Youth Day with activities and communication
  • Manage the 2 main events of the year: Heritage Day (24th of September) and Christmas lunch (18th of December) - organise the place, food, activities, presentation…

 Cooperative infrastructure upgrade:

  • Explore how to maximise space, upgrade of the workshop, energy saving plans
  • Explore funding for suitable equipment upgrade and purchase
  • Develop funding plan for IT equipment, other programs

Qualification: 

  • Seven years working experience
  • Three to five years as a programme coordinator
  • Experience in community development work
  • Experience in Program implementation
  • Must be able to communicate fluently in English and isiXhosa
  • Valid and unendorsed Driver's license and Own Motor
  • Excel, Word, Microsoft Outlook and PowerPoint skills
  • Competent report writing abilities
  • Passionate about social and economic sustainable development
  • Relevant Tertiary education
  • Be able to work independently as well as within a team environment
  • A general understanding of entrepreneurship / small business development would be an advantage
