Since 2000, the Student Sponsorship Programme (SSP), a nonprofit trust that has provided educational opportunities to hundreds of talented South African students from low-income families to attend the best secondary schools in Gauteng and the Eastern Cape.

SSP seeks to appoint an Alumni Relations Officer to be based in Johannesburg.

Reports directly to the Communications Director.


  • The Alumni Relations Officer manages the relationship between SSP and the SSP Alumni
  • The role is largely about communicating with alumni and mobilising them – be they university students or seasoned professionals - to remain involved with SSP in various ways
  • The Alumni Relations Officer
    • Plans and implements programmes that keep Alumni connected to each other and to SSP
    • Offers Alumni networking opportunities within their SSP network and with key industry players from various sectors
    • Encourages and promotes the professional development of Alumni
    • Keeps the Alumni community aware of SSP’s accolades, developments, and fundraising drive
  • Communicate with the qlumni community through newsletters, events, web pages and social media
  • Take primary responsibility for planning and implementing major Alumni events
  • Build strategic partnerships with companies, scholarship providers, bursary providers, NSFAS, Universities and job-readiness programmes to ensure alumni access opportunities of employment and financial aid
  • Responsible for bringing outgoing SSP Alumni in the final years of high school into the post-matric SSP Alumni community
  • Required to travel regularly within South Africa, and occasionally internationally


  • Project Management degree/qualification. Public Relations/ Marketing /Communications degree/qualification
  • A post-graduate qualification will be an advantage.
  • Ideally, the candidate must possess a minimum of two to four years of experience in Alumni Relations and/or Public Relations, with demonstrated accomplishments in fostering productive relationships with a variety of stakeholders
  • Demonstrably strong writing, planning and organising skills
  • Knowledge of marketing, public relations and event planning, methods and techniques
  • IT skills, preferably with experience working with a customer relationship management (CRM) system and/or online communication system (e.g. Mail Chimp)
  • Strong ICT skills, including the use of social media, and basic website management
  • Demonstrable database management skills
  • Research skills
  • Sound data analysis and report writing ability
  • Some knowledge of marketing public relations and event planning methods and techniques

  • Interpersonal skills, together with the ability to work collaboratively and courteously with colleagues, alumni, other partners
  • Demonstrable networking skills that will be used to connect with SSP Alumni who have lost touch with the organisation.
  • Computer skills (MS Word; PowerPoint; Excel; Outlook; Internet Explorer and MS Project)
  • Fluency in both written and spoken English
  • Fluency in other South African languages is an added advantage
