The District Based Teacher Recruitment Strategy (DBTRS) is an initiative by the National Department of Basic Education, in partnership with ELMA Philanthropies, to improve Pre-Service Teacher Development and competence of teachers who study teaching through Open Distance Learning (ODL).  The programme recruits and enrols 100 young people in the Thabo Mofutsanyane District to study towards B.Ed Foundation Phase and B.Ed Intermediate Phase for four years. The purpose of this position is to assist student teachers with academic issues, teaching practice issues and psychosocial issues to succeed in their studies.  To build necessary studying, planning, self-discipline and coping skills within student teachers to become competent teachers. The position is a one year fixed term consultancy contract which is renewable annually upon satisfactory performance.
Key Roles and Responsibilities

  • Build trusting and respectful relationships with student teachers;
  • Conduct one-on-one meetings with each student teacher to build skills and transfer academic and professional knowledge;
  • Assist student teachers to successfully complete their B.Ed studies;
  • Assist student teachers to understand and meet the requirements of the Higher Learning Institution and / or environment;
  • Unpacking of academic content or theoretical concepts to your best ability based on provided documents;
  • Assist students with skills to apply better approaches (i.e. conduct research, use additional resources) in preparing for their assignments;
  • Conduct lesson assessments to identify capacity gaps in student’s knowledge, pedagogical skills and understanding;
  • Assist and advise students in the development of Foundation Phase lesson plans and preparation of lessons;
  • Provide counselling support on psycho-social issues;
  • Identify student weaknesses and coach students towards overcoming them;
  • Identify risk factors and issues that may threaten student’s studies and work with the students to remove or manage these risks;
  • Identify ways to empower and develop confidence and self-esteem in students
  • Build student’s life skills; to plan better, make better decisions, cope better with school practice and personal issues;
  • Motivate and instill positive attitudes in students to see their potential to succeed and complete their teaching studies;
  • Assist students to make linkages between their studies and school practice, apply the academic content in school practice;
  • Help students to reflect on learning and develop their understanding of the teaching profession;
  • Placement of students in schools to observe and apply teaching practice,
  • Support mentor teachers to transfer their teaching knowledge and skills to student teachers;
  • Ensure students understand what is expected of them for each academic year;
  • Facilitate peer mentorship, where necessary;
  • Provide comprehensive reports on each student’s development, growth and learnings;
  • Lobby for family support where appropriate.

Minimum Requirements

  • Bachelor Degree, preferably B.Ed Foundation or Intermediate Phase, B.Ed Honours would be an added advantage
  • Studied English in First Language at Senior Phase
  • Experience in mentorship
  • Strong interpersonal skills
  • Ability to build and maintain effective and professional relationships with students
  • Be organized with strong time / priority management skills
  • Strong communication and reporting skills, with high attention to detail
  • Resourceful and have insight into student’s challenges
  • Have a valid driver’s license and have own reliable car
  • Residing within Thabo Mofutsanyane District

Added advantage:

  • Experience/ knowledge of Foundation Phase Teaching;
  • Risk identification and management skills;
  • Counselling and motivational skills.
  • Understanding and can speak Sesotho
  • Knowledge of initial teacher education programmes and developments
