The Blue Roof Life Space, located in the Wentworth community of Durban, was founded in 2005, with the visionary support of Alicia Keys and Keep a Child Alive (KCA), and in partnership with the Stephen Lewis Foundation. The Blue Roof currently provides comprehensive HIV services to youth, adolescents living with HIV. The Blue Roof offers a variety of services, including: HIV counselling and testing (HCT), HIV care and antiretroviral therapy (ART), psychosocial and adherence support (including specialised psychosocial support for children and their caregivers, as well as a youth support group), nutritional assessment, education and support, tuberculosis (TB) screening, cervical cancer screening, and linkages to substance abuse counselling, crisis pregnancy counselling and career support. 

The Blue Roof Life Space seeks to appoint a Senior Nurse Clinician to be based in KwaZulu Natal.

Responsibilities:

Management of clinical services for the youth

  • Provide leadership in planning and implementing quality and holistic clinical services. 
  • Identify requirements for staff capacitation, infrastructure, systems, and supply of drugs and equipment, and develop plans to meet these requirements
  • Oversee the quality and efficiency of services delivered
  • Ensure that the health care services are implemented in line with the overall vision of Blue Roof Life Space, best practices, new evidence and relevant Department of Health policies and guidelines
  • Patient assessment, treatment and care
  • Set an example for quality holistic patient care in line with best practice, new evidence and DOH guidelines and policies
  • Assessment, treatment/ management, counselling and care of children, adolescents and family members attending clinical services at 
  • BRLS and outreach events arranged by BRLS. Important services areas for children and adolescents include infectious diseases like HIV (ART) and TB, sexual reproductive health (SRH) services, nutrition and mental health services
  • Assist the clinical team in developing efficient routines for patient management, monitoring, referrals and linkages to community support as well as to secondary and tertiary health services

Management of clinical staff:

  • Recruitment, management and retention of clinical staff
  • On-the-job clinical mentoring on an individual basis as well as in team settings
  • Day-to-day management of working routines and Human Resource related matters
  • Staff reviews and performance management
  • Quality improvement and quality assurance
  • Initiate, facilitate and mentor staff in quality improvement processes
  • Work with the team to develop quality improvement plans for each quality gap identified
  • Ensure ongoing assessment of services

Reporting, Monitoring and Evaluation

  • Complete and maintain comprehensive and clear patient records
  • Submission of monthly statistics and reports as required by DOH and donors
  • Assist the M&E team with reviewing and aligning indicators according to the requirements of Department of Health as well as those of the donors
  • Use routine data and reports to inform decisions, staff capacitation and quality improvement work
  • Assist with documenting best practices and successfully implemented change ideas

Stakeholder relations

  • Assist with input for proposals and reports to external stakeholders including donors and Department of Health
  • Networking and stakeholder relations
  • Showcase the vision and work of Zoe-Life and Blue Roof Life Space
  • Participation and representation in meetings and workshops to collaborate with external stakeholders, including government departments and other non-government initiatives

Requirements:

  • Minimum five years’ experience from public health settings and specific experience in dealing with youth health challenges
  • Thorough knowledge of national policies and guidelines regarding primary healthcare services, HIV, TB, child and adolescent health
  • Experience with recruitment, leadership, motivation and management of staff (clinical)
  • Training, facilitation and mentorship experience
  • Experience with health systems and quality improvement
  • Stakeholder management and networking skills.
  • Experience with implementing Adolescent and Youth Friendly Services (AYFS) is an advantage
  • Experience with Quality Improvement and Quality Assurance work is an advantage
  • Strong managerial experience
  • Grade 12
  • Nursing Degree/Diploma – registrations with the relevant professional bodies
  • Clinical experience/skills dealing with youth programmes
  • Strong and proven record in management of a clinical team
  • Sound knowledge of best practice and evidence based interventions
  • Interpersonal skills and communication skills
  • Strong administration and organisation skills
  • Team working and facilitating skills
  • Ability to work under pressure
  • Strong computer proficiency (full MS office package)
