Habitat for Humanity South Africa (HFHSA) is part of Habitat for Humanity International. Our vision is a world where everyone has a decent place to live. As a not-for-profit Christian ministry, Habitat works in more than 70 countries around the world and welcomes people of all races, religions and nationalities to partner in its mission. The global mission statement is: Seeking to put God’s love into action, Habitat for Humanity brings people together to build homes, communities and hope.

HFHSA has served thousands of families in Gauteng, KZN, Eastern Cape and Western Cape since 1996. The organisation works together with partner communities, NGOs, government, the private sector, and other stakeholders to lead sustainable change in both formal and informal human settlements. By empowering both community members and their leadership, Habitat builds the capacity of communities to identify, plan for and respond to shelter and other livelihood needs.

Currently in a period of exciting growth and change as part of a new global strategic plan implementation, Habitat is seeking to appoint additional members to its National Board of Directors. The organisation seeks business, academic and/or civic leaders who are passionate about development issues, in particular in contributing to holistic, scalable and high-impact shelter-related solutions for the poor.

As full Directors under the new Companies Act of 2008, successful candidates are legally responsible for ensuring good governance and oversight of the organisation. Contributing as members of the various Board Sub-Committees sees Directors spending perhaps 10-20 hours per month on Habitat work, as well as travelling to and attending quarterly Board Meetings (held on a Friday and Saturday) which are generally held in Cape Town, but also in Durban and Johannesburg.

HFHSA is particularly interested in dynamic candidates who are based in Gauteng and have proven expertise in one or more of the following areas: business leadership, networking and fundraising, community development and finance.

Directors serve on the HFHSA Board without remuneration, although the organisation covers out-of-pocket expenses including travel, accommodation, meals and other incidentals.
