In 2000, the Unites Nations produced the Millennium Declaration, which adopted the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs). The Declaration asserts that every individual has the right to dignity, freedom, equality, a basic standard of living that includes freedom from hunger and violence, and encourages tolerance and solidarity. The MDGs were made to operationalise these ideas by setting targets and indicators for poverty reduction in order to achieve the rights set forth. Africa adopted these goals with high hopes in order to address some of its greatest challenges.

With its opulent history of overcoming challenges, Africa is now moving to a new dawn - one where poverty will cease to have an African face. Blessed in resources, both natural and human, a new generation of Africans is taking the leading role in being a part of changing their continent. This generation is determined to write their own destiny; they have started their path and are tackling the challenges to lift the rising tide of a dynamic, stable Africa.

It is in this spirit that ONE would like to celebrate and honor individuals, groups and organisations that have answered the call to be these new leaders through the 2012 ONE Africa Award. By recognising these Africa-driven, Africa-led advocacy efforts that have demonstrated success at a community, national, or regional level, we honor the commitment and progress on the ground. We surely hope that new efforts can be inspired and more lives can be saved.

The closing date for nominations and applications is 26 September 2012.
