The Campaign

This is a very special year for everyone associated with SANGONeT as we celebrate a significant milestone - our 25th anniversary.

Given the overall focus and scope of our work, and our relationship with a wide spectrum of NGOs in South Africa, we would like to use our 25th anniversary year not only to celebrate SANGONeT's achievements, but also to recognise the unique contribution made by NGOs to South African society in general.

One of our main activities in this regard will be the annual SANGONeT "No Pain No Gain" fundraising and awareness-raising campaign.

Now in its third year, the campaign was first implemented in 2010 linked to the participation of SANGONeT’s Executive Director, David Barnard, in the seven-day, 250km Kalahari Augrabies Extreme Marathon, and followed in 2011 with the second campaign, this time linked to David’s participation in the seven-day 250km Sahara Race in Egypt.

The 2012 campaign will be bigger and more challenging than ever before. Against the background of SANGONeT’s 25th anniversary this year, David will participate in three desert races on three continents - Namib Desert, Gobi Desert and Antarctica - running approximately 750km in some of toughest and most demanding conditions on the planet.

Often, NGOs link their fundraising activities to the participation of athletes and public personalities in various sporting events (e.g. marathons and ultra-marathons such as the Comrades Marathon). However, it is not common practice for staff members of these organisations, or in this case the Executive Director, to take up the challenge on behalf of his/her organisation. Furthermore, running self-supported through three desert races will be a unique and extreme physical challenge to be linked to fundraising and awareness-raising activities.

The objectives of our 2012 "No Pain No Gain" campaign are two-fold.

Firstly, we aim to raise R1 million linked to David’s successful completion of the three desert races. Money raised will be used to expand key SANGONeT services such as the NGO Pulse Portal, Prodder NGO Directory and SANGOTeCH in support of NGOs in South Africa and other parts of Africa. All these services are already making an important contribution to the NGO sector, but we need more support to reach a larger number of NGOs with a wider range of services.

Secondly, we will use the campaign to raise awareness about the work of NGOs at the forefront of development and community work in South Africa. Over and above our ongoing work in support of the sector via various strategic projects and services, we will also start publishing detailed weekly profiles about NGOs on the NGO Pulse Portal as of 22 March 2012 until the end of November 2012. Daily profiles will be published during each of the three desert races to maximise our awareness-raising efforts in support of NGOs in South Africa.

The 2012 “No Pain No Gain” campaign begins on 22 March 2012, a few days before the start of the Namib Desert Challenge, and will continue until 30 November 2012, a few days after the completion of The Last Desert race in Antarctica.

Please follow updates about the 2012 “No Pain, No Gain” campaign on Facebook and read David's regular blogs which will focus on the three desert races, his preparations, the campaign, and the work of SANGONeT and other NGOs.

And remember to make a donation and encourage others to do the same!!
