What can civil society do to strengthen our Chapter 9 Institutions?

Inyathelo: The South African Institute for Advancement
South Africa’s constitutional democracy is premised on an active and informed citizenry, participating in elections and more directly through the various structures established by the Constitution such as the Chapter 9’s (which include the Public Protector and the South African Human Rights Commission).

Situated at the interface between civil society and the government, these bodies are required to be independent, exercising their powers and performing their functions "without fear, favour or prejudice”, subject only to the Constitution and the law.

Inyathelo invites you to join a civil society dialogue on the current threats to our Chapter 9's, and how we as a sector can strengthen and support these vital institutions.

Panellists include Sipho Pityana (Executive Chairman, Izingwe Capital Limited), William Gumede (Associate Professor, School of Governance, University of the Witwatersrand and Executive Chairperson, Democracy Works Foundation) and Prof Pierre De Vos (Claude Leon Foundation Chair in Constitutional Governance, University of Cape Town). Inyathelo’s Executive Director Nozizwe Madlala-Routledge will chair the debate.
