Africa Check is a non-profit organisation set up in 2012 to promote accuracy in public debate and the media in Africa. The goal of Africa Check’s work is to raise the quality of information available to society across the continent. Since 2012 they have fact-checked hundreds of claims on topics from crime and race in South Africa to population numbers in Nigeria and fake health cures in countries around Africa.
 
Based in the Journalism Department of the University of the Witwatersrand in Johannesburg,   

Africa Check seeks to appoint a

Fundraising and Business Development Manager
 

To be responsible for developing and implementing fundraising and revenue mobilisation for Africa’s first independent fact-checking organisation, reporting directly to the London-based Executive Director.

Key responsibilities of this position include:

  • Developing, in liaison with the Executive Director, Africa Check’s overall resource mobilisation strategy, and implementing that strategy
  • Building and maintaining Africa Check’s relationship with new and existing institutional donors
  • Managing the rapid development of the organisations new commercial services unit:
    “TRi Facts” – Training, Research & Information from Africa Check
  • Exploring opportunities for crowd-funding, ticketed-events and sponsorships, all in keeping with the organisations non-partisan approach
  • Creating a network of individual supporters and members

The Fundraising and Business Development Manager will be:

  • Experienced in developing resources across all areas of revenue
  • Developing relationships with institutional donors to creating from scratch a commercial revenue-generating service
  • Promoting the agreed services and ensuring targets agreed are met and services provided

Qualities Africa Check would seek in the Fundraising and Business Development Manager would include:

  • An interest in, enthusiasm for and understanding of Africa Check’s work
  • A track record of developing and implementing a resource mobilization strategy for a small but growing non-profit organisation, covering both the creation of commercial operations and developing institutional and individual donors relationships
  • A hands-on approach to the work and an easy and approachable manner
