Mandela Day – Living His Legacy…
“I learned that courage was not the absence of fear, but the triumph over it. The brave man is not he who does not feel afraid, but he who conquers that fear.”
The Nelson Mandela Annual Lecture Series invites prominent people to drive debate on significant social issues. The lecture series is an important event on the Nelson Mandela Foundation's calendar, and encourages people to enter into dialogue – often about difficult subjects – in order to address the challenges, we face today. Previous speakers include former US president Bill Clinton; Archbishop Desmond Tutu; former president Thabo Mbeki; Chilean-American author and human rights activist Ariel Dorfman; Nobel laureate Wangari Maathai; former UN secretary-general Kofi Annan and Microsoft founder and philanthropist Bill Gates to name a few.
This year the lecture was delivered by former US president Barack Obama. The lecture, in partnership with the Motsepe Foundation, came a day before the Nelson Mandela International Day themed: "Renewing the Mandela Legacy and Promoting Active Citizenship in a Changing World".

In celebration of the Annual Mandela Day, SANGONeT staff spent the day with the beautiful and vibrant children of Kids Haven. As the team packed sandwiches kids enjoyed over morning and afternoon tea, the other half held a small basic computer training session for the older kids. Nothing beats a smile of a child as they have their first experience of anything big or small, that is exactly what we were served on the day, loads of smiles; happiness; love and enjoyment as they practiced using the mouse, typing their names and shutting down a computer.
Kids Haven opened in 1992 to serve the homeless (street) children and children in crisis in the Ekurhuleni region, South Africa. Everything they do focuses on protecting these children and giving them a future.

As part of the centenary celebration, Sarb said that the South African Mint, a subsidiary of the Sarb will also be issuing a new commemorative circulation R5 coin. “As part of the preparations for the launch, test packs of the commemorative banknotes were made available to members of the broader cash industry to allow them to make adequate preparations in relation to issues such as adaptions of cash processing and cash dispensing machines, ticketing machines and so forth”, said Sarb.
